Oil Catch Can?
I read on a website that turbo-charged engines are prone to residue build-up in the intake tract, and that a oil catch can can help prevent this - resulting in longer turbo life.
My 04 WRX is the first turbo car I have owned, so sorry to sound like the newb that I am, but is there any validity to this at all?

Not sure about extending turbo life but if the oil makes it to your IC it will make it less efficient:

Peaty... has this since cure your oil in the IC problem? I have a little bit of oil in my metal IC lines, the ones that run parallel across the front of it. I was wondering if this is worth it and can the oil be very detrimental to my motor's health?

Keeping the intake charge free of oil contamination is worthwhile because it can make the intake charge more prone to detonation - at least that's my understanding. A small amount of oil vapor may not cause a problem unless your engine is tuned to the ragged edge of detonation. Some engine builders even specify ashless engine oil, again to ward off detonation.
Another benefit of a catch can would be to keep the inside of the intercooler clean and dry, allowing it to pass as much heat as it possibly can to the ambient air.

If an intercooler has been running for 25k miles without an oil catch can, can you flush the inside of it out somehow before adding a catch? Or will just adding the catch can allow the oil to vaporize and be trapped?

That is, if you have a WRX; the model of car matters! Both of Peaty's links are to Forrester installs, but I've seen a WRX install of the Perrin can on Scoobymods as well.

you can clean the inside of the intercooler with gas or brake cleaner, just seal the throttle body outlet and start pouring/praying away. Also, the only oil catch can I've ever seen with internal baffling (which is much more helpful in stopping oil) is the AVO, another one of those AVO things where you get what you pay for.
