Noobie frist mods ?
Hey everybody im a noobie to teh suby scene, I am currently a teg owner. i was wondering what are the usual first mods that people put on the 02'-03' rex's?also which parts like new intercooler pipes, intakes, bov's etc are smog legal and not?also is perrin a good brand? I Know vishnu is a good quality brand. Also It's gonna be a daily driver, I will be drag racing occasionally and I want a strong powerband through the rpms and quick spooling for my rex. Thanks!

Yes perrin's nice. Uppipe, turboback and ecu flash are usually first. If you upgrade the turbo then for driveability I'd say a vf23,30 or 34. They all spool fairly quick. Vf22 or garrett conversion for big power. All these will require fuel system upgrades too. Just a little info.
first mods should be the FREE mods. Silencer removal.... and the 3/16th" coupling. those should be your first. from there you might wanna do ecu and uppipe. the stock turbo is so0 small you might wanna think about getting a bigger one. dont forget about your down pipe and your exhaust after that. ohh yeah dont forget about your suspension.

If you can get away with replacing your uppipe with a catless up, then that's the first thing to do. You can get turboback systems with cats and stay legal there but it is more expensive. On the intake side I don't know about Cali. but there are no laws here against i/c piping or bov/dv. The most simple mod you can do is get a K&N high flow air filter. Maybe get a water spray kit for your i/c .I don't know the Cali. laws, but heard they can be harsh, so I can't help to much for totaly legal mods.

The Turbo xs exhaust systems allow you to run a cat if you choose to. The turbo xs high flow cat will keep you emissions friendly even in california and will not cause check engine lights.
Look in the exhaust section of this module:

Not really legal
Replacing/removing any of your cats is TECHNICALLY illegal--it is a FEDERAL offense, so it applies to all states. Period. There is a certain mileage (60K miles?) after which you can REPLACE the cat if it is damaged. So even if you put in an uppipe with an aftermarket cat in it, it's not really legal unless your car meets the replacement criteria. I'll try and find the link that explains the laws. Anyway, enforcement is the big variable here and the reason some people pass and some don't.
On a positive note, smog techs will generally not look at the uppipe cause it's so hard to see in there. They may or may not see the downpipe and tag you if they know it's aftermarket. The third cat is, well, pretty obvious so you'll likely get denied there if you remove it.
As for the rest of the engine: well, unless a part has a CARB number, it's not legal in Cali and may or may not pass visual.
In short, in Cali (and probably other states), it's really luck of the draw how **** your Smog Tech is about everything. I heard somebody passed with one cat on a WRX, and I've heard people getting tagged for stupid little things. So go figure. There are some RIDICULOUS laws regarding aftermarket parts and it's really up to the smog tech/police officer whether they want to pass/cite you or not.
Good luck
Chris

Hi there...
All aftermarket uppipes are going to be catless. Removing the cat in your uppipe has no effect on your ability to pass emissions. The cats that do the filtering of hydrocarbons from your cumbustion mixture are after the turbo in the downpipe and the center section of your stock exhaust.
You can get rid of the cat in your uppipe and enjoy the gains that this provides without having to worry about smog tests, check engine lights or anything like that.
You should also try if possible to do your exhaust at the same time to avoid doing the same work twice.
The exhaust is what we reccomend that customers take care of first because be removing the two exhaust cats completly or by reaplacing the two stock cats with one high flow cat in a system like the turbo xs you gain a substantial amount of power. 28-30WHP in most cases.
Keep in mind that if you keep one cat in your exhaust even though it is a high flow cat you will pass emissions, and you will not get check engine lights.
As for uppipes the TXS is a great unit. Very heavy duty cast iron construction and excellent for the high temp and pressure environments that the uppipe is subjected too.
The perrin uppipe is nice as well, yet its a little more expensive then the TXS. We currently have both on sale actually and the fact of the matter is that both pipes will do the job just fine.
Give us a call if you have any other questions. We are behind the phones all day and would love to chat one on one so that you can get all of this modification madness staight in your head.
Thanks again, and let us know if you have questions.

There are actually a handful of aftermarket uppipes with a cat, i think MRT makes one, and one or two other companies.
I passed emissions with just the 3rd cat. If you're tight on budget you can get really good gains ~20-25hp by just replacing the uppipe and downpipe. PDE, Vishnu, Perrin make really good catless uppipes and i haven't heard of any fitment issues on any of them. Good catless downpipe that leave the 3rd cat in place are Bosal, scoobysport. Look for a bellmouth design or twin-dump design downpipe rather than one like the stromung where the wastegate outlet is covered, they provide much smoother flow, especially if you ever plan to crank the boost or go with a bigger turbo.
gotta run, but i'll try to pop back in later with more info...

One cat, ceramic coated twin dump, turboback. I'm running the dp03 and it's amazing.

wow, good info in this thread for a newB like me.
LETS KEEP THIS GOING!
A few questions for the more seasoned subaru guys here:
I am on a very tight budget (for now) and want more power out of my 2004 Forester 2.5XT.
(1.) Are most WRX or STI engine parts interchangeable w/ my car?
Specifically, BOV, intake (sri vs cai), up/down pipes, etc. I know its the same engine as the STI (basically) and it's built on the Impreza platform, so i'm sure some stuff is interchangeable, probably not cat-back and so forth though.
(2.) Are there any *FREE* mods I can do, like removing some restrictions somewhere or something (link/pic/info)?
(3.) Can i simply buy/make a boost controller and maybe raise the boost to like 15-16psi (i think stock is 11psi) w/o upgrading anything else (ie: Will the ECU compensate for the extra boost?)
(4.) I opted for the automatic transmission which i know is not the best choice for performance, but are there guys running good times w/o having to rebuild the trans/get a new TC/etc? I mean, is the trans. pretty beefy, can it hold say 300-350whp (my goal)?
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks In Advance,
---Adam---

the only thing that cali allows you to do to your car legally is a catback exhaust with a carb number and a drop in air filter, anything else is at your own risk, btw if you are in the so cal area i would recomend going to gtmotorsports in ontario most of the people who work there own wrxs very helpful, also they are licensed to do ecuteck ecu reflashes same as a chip just no evidence
