True equal length headers will greatly reduce that boxer sound. Any non-equal length headers will keep it, and probably enhance it by being louder.
i just put in gruppe-s (un-equal length) headers and a vf34.
the exhaust note is different, but I'm not sure if it's the headers of the spooling sound of the vf34. My stock turbo had a distict whistle sound to it's spool. the vf34 has more of a raspy, metalic sound. Or that could be the headers.

friend of mine just put on the gp moto equal length header for his wrx. not sure on the power but the throttle response and turbo spool seemed quicker.
definitely doesn't sound like a boxer motor anymore. has a unique(racey or ricey)sound to it almost like an inline 4. you either like it or hate it. personally i like it just for the fact that it's sound is different from all the other wrx's on the road.
