well i have a 2004 wrx sedan and i am not expirencing this but...are you using a SUBARU OEM Filter? if you are make sure it is the new model number too because subaru changed the oil filters for the new 2004's. I believe the new ones are black instead of white.

^^^
this got me a little worried for a sec.
I always use the oem white oil filters i get from subaru.

They changed manufacturer, and the newer black filters are slightly smaller I believe. Here is a good explanation of the oil filter switch. In short, you can use either the '060' or '080' filter without worry.
