I use Mobil1 too. IMO, changing your own oil is the only way you know it's been done right.

It takes me 20 minutes and gives me piece of mind where I don't have to worry about: what kind of oil they used (how do you REALLY know?), if they damaged anything else while changing the oil, if they took my car for a "test drive", etc.

Unless I really have to, I don't trust anyone else with my car. No valet parking (I used to know some folks who were valets), etc.

i've seen 1st hand a lot of horrible service (filters about to fall off, way underfilled, etc) from commercial establishments.

the 20 bucks for mobil 1 oil and the 4 bucks for the oem filter (bulk, mail order) make my "done right" fully synthetic oil change cheaper than the "who knows how well it's done" dino oil change somewhere else. like others, i like working on my own car--for me, it's a bonding experience.

the only time someone else has touched my car for service was the first oil change, at 1k miles, at the dealer. it was free, and i wanted to run dino for another 3k miles. i'm now at 18k, and it's been a few weeks short of a year.

Go to a Walmart that has a car care center. They will change it for you with mobil-1 for $30.00. Why do it your self for that price.

One more thing Walmart uses the oil off the shelf so you can see what you are getting, and that includes filter. Before you leave just check it.

Just so you know... I know girl who had a chevy corsica with abot 50,000 miles on it. She went to walmart to get the oil changed and they did not get the oil plug in right. It came out. With almost no hassle they got here a new motor from gm, woth a warranty and a paid rental car for the time she was without her car. They did screw up but they made it right.

My car just got its first taste of synthetic yesterday after 5900 miles. How long can synthetic go in a car without being changed ?

I second the motion that I enjoy changing my car's oil because it is a bonding expierience.

Hey...not everybody wants to cook their own dinner either.

Go for the Mobil 1 and enjoy your WRX.
Perfect analogy...

and also... I swear to mobil1 synthetic... I got my car w/ approx 100K on it, have put about 19K on it in little over a year, and absolutely no problems whatsoever (knock on this, superstitio), except for the defective wheel bearing (which subaru admitted had a design flaw, but did not pay for )

I do and would always change my oil at 3,000 miles. Not just because of the oil life, but oil filters don' t do much good after that. Play it safe and change it every 3k. Its worht the money in the long run. I have a 94 grand chrke limited with 165k on it. I've had it for 6 years. Have always used syn. oil and changed it every 3k and it runs great. It shares the driving duties with the wrx. The jeep is not much of a daily driver either. 3 1/2inch rubicon lift 32x11.5 MT 410 gears air lockers front and rear and v8. Try that gas bill on for size. I lilke to hit the trails also.

buy a 7k mile filter, drop your oil @ 7, new filter, put oil back in. if you're a freak like my buddy, he even strains his oil before putting it back in. i know fram makes 7k mile filters.

i use mobil 1, royal purple, redline. i switch them around whenever i feel like it.

i think one of the reason that most ppl do their oil changes themselves is due to having modified cars and they enjoy working on their cars. i don't take my cars to the dealership to go get an oil change, because if they screw up and car goes bang, they can blame it on the modification rather than their own fault. (luckly i have oil press gauge to monitor such things. It happend to me once... they didn't tighten the oil filter properly and while I was driving home, I see my oil pressure dropping below the warning area (I set it at 1.5 bar of pressure at idle)... i get out of the car, check under... i see oil leaking from the filter.

i wouldn't mind taking my car to the dealership to get an oil change, but i am just afraid that they will see my mod and put me on their black list for warrenty. so I take it to my friendly mpj/gb hehe.
