Major Engine Problem!!!

I was just driving my car the other night, on Sunday, after returning from the club! As always there is always some dumb *** in a honda that thinks their car is fast! I was on ther freeway, and the honda and I decided to race! As I was climbing in 4th gear my car started to decelerate and then the check engine light started blinking. It was really hard to rev and reved really slow. I continued my way home which was like 2 miles away. The car kinda started to smell like burning oil. As soon as I got of the freeway, I noticed the car was smokin! a lil bit out of the exhaust and it smelt horrible. I took the turn up my hill and the car was runnin so ****ty, boggin, smokin out the exhaust and knocking. As soon as I pulled in I poped my hood and there was oil all over my engine compartment. I looked and there was a hose that is an intake hose that had came off, and it seemed that the oil came from there! I checked the oil level and it was fine. I decided to go to bed and deal with it on monday! So I wake up go to the car and start it and it is knockin so bad, and smokin white smoke all out the exhaust, so I poped the hood and as I reved the motor, there was a pop form by the intake manifold and white smoke came out from there to, and it did it a few times!
I have no clue what is wrong with my car. Could some one please help me. I took it to the shop yesterday, and they still don't know what is wrong. They said they have to call a rep to le them know of the aftermarket parts to see if waranty can cover it!
I bought my car last March brand new, and it has 23k miles on it. My after market parts are a...
Injen Cold air intake, Blitz BOV, Perrin Catless up-pipe, Stromung catless down-pipe, Greddy Evo 3" exhaust, a boost controller @18psi, Sprint lowering springs, 18" Racing Hart White CP 10s, painted skirts, Zero Sports wing adapters, and Black Housing headlamps
I don't know if any of thoose could have cause the damage, I am just really confuessed and upset! I have had all thoose mods for the last 6 months why now?
Also could someone let me know what the waranty deal is if you have aftermarket parts! Thakns Everyone!!!
The good news is I beat the Honda and I pulled a 12.9 at 107mph at the track on Febuary 9th and I had a 1.8 60 ft. And only with thoose mods. Stock turbo, stock intercooler!

I think it's the headlinght mod that did it...
Seriously though, you are running free flow intake, exhaust and stock injectors and you're running 18 psi of boost. And you raced on the highway in 4th gear, which means you were at full boost for more then a few seconds and cold weather made you even leaner then you already were. Did you really think the engne can take that kind of punishment? I would guess you've toasted a piston or 2. Time for a new block. Just make sure you get some gauges to monitor what your engine is doing and make sure you have fuel to support your mods.

owch...18psi on the stock turbo is just asking for catastrophic engine failure. Not only were you running 18psi, but you had absolutly no engine management. With your mods (just the boost controller alone) it will never be covered under warranty. Time for a new motor. Good luck!
All I can say is uhhmm... DUH! Oh, and they're not going to warranty it. Just because you can turn it up to 18psi doesn't mean it's helping. At 18psi that turbo is putting out such hot air that you probably weren't running any faster than stock. With no engine management the stock computer is going to try to give you insane amounts of timing advance in the upper RPMs where it usually tapers boost. Lots of timing advance, lean fueling, high boost, and high intake temps = BOOM!
Wow, now I really don't feel so bad about my motor. Thanks.

"some dumb *** in a honda "
His car is still running I'd bet...
So that anyone that reads this might learn something.. With a UTec, full headersback exhaust, and stock turbo... on the dyno my car made no more hp at 16.5psi than it did at 15.5. Without a port/polish/clip the stock turbo just can't push high boost effeciently.
As everyone else said.. the motor is cooked. Probably did fry a piston in your 4th gear pull. Forget a warranty at this point. "Gotta pay to play." Incidently.. used unichips or even utecs are pretty affordable these days.. surely cheaper than a motor.

hey
i bet it was the turbo outlet that blew off, and the oil was from the turbo.
without sounding too harsh, everyone here is right. the cai causes a lean condition (dyno proven) and running 18 psi is simpy too much for the stock turbo. it was at night in Seattle, which means it was probably cold. pushing that cold dense air will also cause a lean condition, and that alone is scary with the crappy gas we have here in the US. All that probably combined to make one hell of a lean condition in cylinder 3 (imfamous for running lean) and blew the gasket, or the piston, or both. Or even more than that. maybe even cooked the turbo bearing seals.
either way you look at it, good luck with your new motor. as others have said, there is no way they will warranty it, even if you can get it back looking stock. Before you put all those parts on your new motor, do some research in this forum and the engine mgnt section. there is VOLUMES of knowledge here, and just a few hours could have saved you some $$.
good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Isn't there a fuel cutoff on the stocker turbo ~ 17-18psi?
I would imagine that as the car runs ~15psi most of the time an extra 3psi wouldn't be so bad. Are you sure it was only 18psi?
I know the boost builds fast in 4th gear... maybe you overshot further.

This frankly is a lil scary and confusing to me. First,a nytime you toy around with modifying your car, you have to accept the risk that you'll shorten the engine life, and most certainly void the warranty. Take it out of that shop, put it back to stock, then call the subaru rep. Second, a few weeks ago, I was at LACR doin the 1/4 when I met the owner of Easystreet Motorsports. I have on my car a MBC (a real crappy one). We were talkin bout our runs when he told me to turn the boost up. I'm very warry of my car so I asked will that hurt the engine. He replied no, because there is a cut of at 18 psi preventing damage. Now, it seems to me if there was no problem with it, it would have came stock. I also talked to a couple techies at subaru, and their opinion was that the stock turbo loses efficiency at 16.5 lbs, 2lbs over stock. Above that, the turbo is into question. So with all that information,a nd my experience with turbo cars (specifically trashing an 88 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R 2.6l) I'll tell you what wrong (as a matter of opinion).
First, I dont think its your piston necassarily. If you blew a ring, you would of most liekly fouled your plugs by the time you got home. You can pull em out and check em for oil. If you found some, you get to rebuild your block. Now, since oil came out of you intake (in front of the turbo turbine), sound like you lost a seal around the floating bearings. I had a similiar experience and it would explain most of your trouble. This then means you get to rebuild teh turbo,a n rebalance, or more likely, buy a new one. There really is'nt a cheap way out of it, but if I were you I would hope for the turbo. Peace

Thanks for all of your input!!! I put the car back to stock(pain in the ***) and I took it to another Subaru dealership. They took a look at it and they are covering it under waranty! Yes they are!!! That's a good thing!
Cylinder # 3 hunh.... hmm... that is funny, cause I blew up cylinder # 1! I have absolutely no compression in cylinder # 1!
Well I just bought a fuel pump, and a fuel regulator hopefully this will cause me from leaning out again! I also am leaving boost at 16psi, cause this is where the turbo is most efficient!

A fuel pump and regulator is not engine management! You should heed Josh's advice and read posts in this forum and the Engine Management forum.

YOU PLAY, YOU PAY
You don't have other people pay for your retarded mistakes and f-ups!
Another suggestion, don't even mod out this new block that you are getting in. You obviously don't know what you are doing with a forced induction engine. You can't just add fuel components and expect your engine to run just fine.

I agree that you have no idea what you are doing (hence you f*cked your car). I agree that it is car f*ckings like that that cause Dealers to be quick to deny warantee coverage to modders who know what they're doing. And I agree that you shouldn't jump in and mod the new block and just add fuel components and think everything will just be chipper.
I think you're VERY VERY lucky to have the dealer cover this for you. you need to study up on this stuff before you think about putzing around with it some more and for god sake get people who know what they're doing (and I mean really know, not just some schmuch friend who modded his civic) help you out in deciding what where when and how to mod.
my first though when I first read your post was "that poor bastard" my next thought was "wow he had no idea what he was doing with his mods" then I read everyone elses response and most agreed. now after reading how the situation ended up it seems as if you didn't learn anything. If you dont learn something from this I guarantee you're car will be back in the shop with something broken again in a month or two. I emplore you for the reputation of WRX owners everywhere... put on a study cap step back from the situation and learn what you did wrong and do it right next time.
not many people get a second change... you did... now be a better modder from it.

Man o Man! Everyone is a straight up *** in here! I just came on here for advice and help! I got advice form someone that told me to get a fuel regulator and a fuel pump to enhance the fuel so it won't run lean! I never said that I was gonna be runnig 18psi again! I have it set for 16psi! Now at 16psi with a regulator and an upgraded pump, I should be ok! Geez... I have an EGT gauge to check what my temps are now too, so i can watch it a lil better! I never said I knew everything about cars, that is obviously why I am askin on the forum what to do! And where do you think I got my ideas for mods from.... hmmm..... yup you guys on the forum! And now you are telling me I put it together wrong, when this is what you told me to do in the first place!

If you guys were smart and scandalus, then you guys could get things covered under waranty too! What, did you think I was gonna pay $6gs to get my car fixed at the dealership! Hell no! So I took the time to put it back to stock, and I just played stupid! I don't see what is wrong with that!

a) Doesn't know and even admits that they don't know what they are doing in the way of modding the car.
b) Dishonest enough to do what you did in that you are basically flat out LIEING to the dealership
I mean did you seriously just listen to what some people on a message board on the internet say to do to modify your car? I went to MANy MANY forums over the course of 3 years and talked with EVERY tuner I could, in length, before I started to do the level of mods you are talking about on your car even at only 16psi!!! Do MORE research and get some freagin' gauges!!!
I just don't know what else to say but Wow... if you can't see how you are wrong in not knowing what you are doing and/or lieing to the dealership about what you did

I don't even know where to start. First of all, just a fuel regulator, a turbo boosted up to 16psi, and a fuel pump are going to do nothing. Because 1) You don't need an aftermarket pump for the stock mitsu turbo. The stock fuel pump will be more than enough for the stock turbo. 2)What makes you think you need a fuel pressure regulator? The people that get these are the ones who are stage 4+ equivalent with upgraded turbos, ic's, fuel rails, etc. YOU DON'T NEED THE PUMP NOR THE REGULATOR. What you really need is ENGINE MANAGEMENT!
I just think you are getting the wrong ideas from the wrong people. More than likely you probably aren't explaining what you have done or what you want to do with your car. Ask some guys in the local area what they are doing. Go to some install fests, talk to some local shops, call some reputable subaru tuning companies (Vishnu, Cobb, TurboXS, etc). I am sure they would help you out.
Now, I will start on the second part of your thinking. First off, if you were morally and financially responsible you WOULDN'T be scandalous and try to rip off the dealership. I do think you should pay the money to get your car fixed! Like I said before, You play, you pay. You ****ed up, why are dropping the ball on them? I hope this is not what you do in life too!
Just because you put in the time to take out your mods does NOT make it ok to have the dealership and Subaru of America pay for your stupidity and errors. They are there to fix (Or at least attempt to fix) problems that go wrong with the car but only when something goes wrong that you didn't deliberately cause (READ - Valid warranty claims). I mean if your door handle breaks on the interior they will cover that. But when you turn the boost up to 18psi, floor it on the freeway with no engine management, and are running lean, ummm something is bound to go wrong eventually.
I almost feel like calling the dealership that is around your area (Where you likely have your car) and tell them to check for indications of prior modifications. But I guess I'm not that big of an *******.

Ok the dealership is gettin their $ for fixing the car, and the only person that is really paying for it is Subaru. I think they have enough $ lying around to cover a short block! By the way I do have gauges too! I wasn't even the one that tuned my car! I had a shop do it! So don't get all mad at me for blowin up my car, Just cause I didn't know! I am not a car expert! Now lets say you needed to get your car fixed, I know you would go to the dealership with your car stock tryin to get it fixed too!

He may not get the last laugh...
I sent a link of this thread without any explanation to all the Subie dealerships in the Seattle Washington area as well as Subaru-America.
Call me an a-hole if you like, but stuff like this just makes me sick. And anyone who comes to a forum to BRAG about being an immoral jerk DESERVES to be turned in.
Fraud charges ought to be brought against this guy...

I thought you got all the tuning information off of this forum!? But then you say you weren't even the one that tuned your car!? Plus, I don't think anyone on here told you to run 18psi, and if they did please give us the link to the thread. I also highly doubt that any shop would tell you that its OK to run 4psi over stock with no supporting moddifications. You don't deserve to have your car fixed under warranty and for your sake you better hope the dealership/SOA dosen't press charges for fraud. That would suck worse than losing to a civic after you blow your motor.

Just an FYI...
I got a coupl of replies from the e-mails I sent. One was from a service manager at one of the Seattle dealerships who said that he'd tried to get it fixed there and SOA denied warranty coverage. This could've been the first place he tried to take it. Or maybe the guy at the second place changed his mind. Either way, he said he e-mailed all the other dealerships and SOA with the guys plate and VIN number. No way Subaru pays a cent on his warranty, even if it's not mod-related...

I'm sorry but you're making yourself out to be the complete a**hole. First off you shouldn't be modding your car if you have no idea what you're doing. Second off you're scandalous for trying to rip off SOA for your own mistake. It's because of people like you that car companies, insurance companies, etc. have to be so damn strict on claims. I'll be happy to hear that you're claim is denied. Afterall you truthfully don't deserve it for trying to defraud a company for your mistake. Do people have no morals these days?
