Low frequency humm under acceleration

I have a 2002 WRX with 105K miles.
Haven't driven the sucker for a week, and when i was driving to work this morning I noticed a low frequency noise under acceleration. It only happens under load. If I'm in neutral or clutched in, revving through the whole range sounds ok. But if I'm in gear, and step on the gas, I can hear a distinctive humm anywhere between 2500rpm - 6000rpm or so.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Some tires are just noisy, my A048's make lots of noise but, thats just because of the stiff sidewalls. there is nothing wrong with the tire. you should still get them checked out.

um, I think if it were tires it wouldn't happen like it did (not doing it one day, then he doesn't drive it, and then it does it) unless he changed the tires in that one week period. I would narrow your search down to something else rotational since its only when you're moving (like something in the driveline or tranny).
I'd suggest taking it up to LIC in Novato and have them look at it
