Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Lightweight Flywheel - Induced Misfire CEL's.. are they detrimental to the engine?

As far as lightweight flywheels go, i've planned to get the lightest one that would still be somewhat practical; i've read about the Ej20 having misfire CEL's because of the flywheels, and that some people get them, others don't. I've also read that the STi's don't have this problem mainly because the Ej25 apparently has 2 cam sensors.

My main concern, is if and when the time comes to change my clutch and flywheel out, would the misfire CEL's be detrimental to the engine? That is, would there really be misfires happening, or is the sensor just "trippin out"?

I have long thought about it, but wasn't able to conclude if it would be safe to drive around all the time with a light flywheel and misfire cel's happening left and right.

stock crank pulley and 9.5 lbs flywheel shouldnt be a problem or 14 lbs and lw crank pulley not a problem but both together are bad

Thanks for the help.

any more insight? Just a thought as I would rather not be stuck with a car that kills itself because of a dumb light flywheel.. lol.

well the misfire is just a code that comes up and doesnt really happen but the ecu think it is because there isnt enough mass to keep it going

what IS a problem is jumping teeth on a cam gear 4 or more can be the case and these are interferance engines so bent valves and cracked pistons

i would just get a ACT streetlite flywheel because there cheap and are 13#

there are no long term effects from a LW flywheel. the cels are just the ecu's interpretation of what's happening--the misfires are not actually occuring.

fwiw, i run a GFB pulley set and an act streetlight. no issues at all. then again, i get misfires all the time from running launch control on a txs utec.
