Remember that you live in VA. Bring your car to California and have it checked here and see how ya do. California again has one of the top if not the top most emission restrictions.

Exactly, I live in VA and this is where he is asking about the emissions testing. If we lived in Cali it would be different.

Northern Va. to be precise has similar standards to Cali if Im not mistaken, and even if ours are easier to pass, then making it Cali legal would alleviate any problems (hopefully) of being smog un-friendly here.

That's usually true that if a car is 100% legal in CA, it'll pass smog in any of the 50 states.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are posts that refer to passing the sniffer test and other posts that ask about being legal to the letter of the law.

Modified cars can often pass the tailpipe sniffer, but sometimes cannot pass the visual inspection part of the CA smog check once it is determined that any of the three cats on a WRX have been removed or rendered inoperable.

The visual is much harder to pass with a modified car because even if the mods are minor, such as an aftermarket BOV, it won't technically pass the visual inspection because a BOV vents part of the metered intake air to the atmosphere, throwing off the calculated MAF readings.

Here in AZ, WRXs don't have to pass anything but a visual inspection, period -- in fact, all AWD cars get a pass on the sniffer test entirely.

Why? Because the ADMV was so cheap that they opted for a type of equipment which will only work with FWD or RWD cars; the bays only have one big "roller" which allows the drive wheels to spin, so a full-time 4wd car simply cannot be tested. They do not have lifts, jacks or any means of raising the vehicle off the ground at all.

Last time I went to the DMV emissions station, they have a large bold sign which reads "WARNING SUBARU OWNERS - DO NOT ENTER"

Crazy, eh?

Man! I'm packin' my bags and movin' to AZ.

CA also has two-wheel drive dyno testing in some designated pollution areas and subies and other full-time AWD vehicles are exempt from that section of the test but still must undergo the tailpipe sniffer test at idle and something like 2500 rpm of no-load revs.

The day you find an emissions monkey that can even find the uppipe let alone decide if it has a cat in it or not, hell's gonna freeze over.

Why such the big deal about it being legal? Even if emissions testing comes around just keep you stock Up pipe and exhaust system in the garage and slap them on when emissions come around. Remember when you get the emissions paper in the mail it you have a 1-2 month window. [/B]
Its the principle more than anything else. I need to set a good example (given my chosen career) and I don't want to be viewed as a hypocrite. I do however want to tune my car because like most of you, I started years ago and have yet to find a way to stop I need to find the legal way to do it though.
