Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Question Legal high power setup

I've been piecing my ideas together and have decided to stay away from taking out any of the cats, period.

With that said, I've been thinking about going with some mods and am wondering what kind of numbers you think it will give me.

- VF34 (requisite pump and injectors)
- Engine Tuning (probably UTEC)

1) With that and maybe a cat-back, what do you think I would be able to pull on a chasis dyno? I'm thinking tops 250 whp.

2) What effect do you think these will have on emmissions (in Va., but tests are similar to Cali.).

Thanks for the input,
Chris

i think 250 whp is doable with the cats in. you should be able to pass emissions no sweat. if it is an ecutek reflash, you can have it flashed for smog also.

Keep us posted. I'm interested in legal power gains, and 250 whp sounds like a good number

Thumbs up

I know you said that you would not want to remove any cats, but i have heard but never seen any proof that the uppipe cat is known to come apart over time. Maybe a gutted uppipe (which will not feel as smooth) or atleast an aftermarket uppipe. Other than that i too will be looking foward to see what kinda numbers you put out. good luck, mario

I live in VA and I have the turboxs stage 4 with tmic and only 1 high flow cat that came with their turbo back exhaust and I passed VA emissions easily. Just a thought, but you can get away without the cats here if you at least have the 3" highflow on, and I even passed inspection too. Maybe this will help you some.

Oh! This Garret kit sounds pretty interesting. What are its components? Cost? Any more info would be greatly appreciated

Get a JDM non-catted uppipe and nobody will ever know that it's not catted but you....you could cut the probe end off a stock EGT probe and install it and just wire the connector up with a resistor in the plug, all stock looking.... That would take care of the uppipe quite nicely I should think.
This is what I would do if emissions testing were required where I lived.

No...the JDM pipe looks very much like the USDM uppipe on the outside but no cat inside, Japan market never had one in the uppipe...smooth as a babies *** inside
Somebody would have to know EXACTLY what the differences were to tell the difference from the outside.

An EXCELLENT stealth mod

Thats not what im saying. im saying that the USDM uppipe has a slight bulge in it. It can be slighty turbulant to the flow. i'm speaking from experince. I had a gutted uppipe for 6 months then switched to the helix w/ a flex and WOW the smooth power delivery was amazing. thats it

I thought you were asking a question....and I was hoping to answer it...If I needed to maintain the stock, OEM look...I would use a JDM non-catted uppipe.

Haha, you all definately love switching the pipes.

I heard about the uppipe coming apart and am kind of concerned about that especially since Ill be changing stuff around the turbo. But I really cant drive around with an illegal car due to my job. Wouldn't set a good example.

03blau, any more info on the Garrett would be appreciated, thanks.
