just a thought........about warrenty stuff
this is a quote my IMPREZER, one of the admin guys,
"Here is my example. My car is very much modified. The window switch broke and I got my warranty denied. For a freaking window switch. I have not touched the door. My mods have nothing to do with the switch. Yet, Subaru said no. I did not blame them. I blamed those, who ABUSED Subaru's warranty policy and took advantage of them."
with all the jazz that's goin around about warrenty fraud....i have one thought. i agree with you guys, if i put all kinds of work into my engine, of course i'm not going to expect SOA to fix it when it breaks. they warrenty the engine in the stock form, it only makes sense. but if the dealer decided they were not going to warrenty my window button because i was running a different turbo, intake, BOV, blah blah blah......you can be damn sure i'd stick one of my lawyers up thier azz, so far up thier azz they'd walk funny for a week!!!!! the fact that some dealer denied your window button claim because you had done work to your engine was an out for them.....AND I THINK THAT STINKS OF SH*T!!!!!! that was a plain and simple out for them, and that is not good bizzness!!!!
again, i don't agree with screwing people for bull**** claims...i have a 2001 jeep wrangler that is so modified the dealer would laugh himself to death if i ever tried to claim something...HAHA!!! i decided a long time ago that i would take that risk...because i wanted a hardcore trail rig. so of course i'm not going to the dealer when i snap a driveshaft in half while on the trail.....but if my horn stopped working i'd be damned if i'd let them turn me down for that!!!!!
drivetrain modifications should NOT void non-drivetrain item........SUCH AS A WINDOW BUTTON!!!!!
see you guys around!!!! later, riggs
as always, this is only my $.02, so let the flaming begin

Ok guys, first let me welcome myself.
I'm Brian, and I do not own a WRX. Although my sister's b/f is looking to purchase one so I've been following the forums for him looking into the basics.
At any rate, I know about boost, and I know about blown engines. I have a 97 supercharged Maxima running 11 pounds and I blew the engine once (at only 6 lbs), screwed up with the FMU.
Anyways, I read all the info regarding this warranty thing and need to point out some things.
1) Ratting him out was counter-productive. If no one said anything SOA would've denied him on his own or they would've fixed it. However, making this large of a scene now opens SOA's eyes real big. They probably sent a bulletin to all dealers threatning them not to work on mod'd cars and to be very thorough in looking at mod'd cars. Thus, the reason no one wants to TOUCH one anymore. So in my opinion you all may have screwed yourself here in your own interests to protect yourself.
2) Not saying I would or wouldn't, but how many of you would honestly not try to do the same thing? I have a hard time believing when it comes to $6,000 that you wouldn't try the same thing. Granted I know there are people who would do the right thing, but I can't believe that all 30 or so of you who replied would be honest. Most people can't afford $6,000 to get the car that they're paying payments on running again. Most people would have to warranty it if possible just to get a working car. I think most of you are lying to yourselves when you say you wouldn't do it. Again, I do not know what I would do in the circumstances. I paid to get my engine replaced because I didn't want to even bother, I have body kit etc (I have 100K warranty and haven't bothered with it). At any rate, if it were easier for me to return my car to stock I'd consider it an option, and I know most people would, we're talking about a $6,000 mistake/expense, which brings me to my next point
3) How many people have returned their cell phone because they dropped it, have fried a processor because they didn't isntall their fans properly, etc. The list goes on, these are little parts too, only $100 or so. Most people return stuff when it breaks even if it's their fault. The entire world operates like this. Sony knows they will replace parts that break that are not Sony's fault. Subaru knows the same, that's why you pay $25k for the car, these sort of factors are factored into it. Subaru built a car with a turbo in it, TRUST me they expect a little of this. Back to the point, from now on anytime you RMA or are waiting in a return line at a store, you need to ask yourself, did I do this or was the manufacturer responsible. Hell ask yourself if you've ever returned something you broke. Again, I'd be hard pressed to hear that all of you would be priests and perfect civil people have never done this.
I kind of feel sorry for the guy, right or wrong, in my eyes i-club.com has been severely degraded.
Not trying to start a flame war, but maybe bring it a little closer to perspective.
The person who said two wrongs don't make a right truly was on target when he posted that.
The irony is I think you really screwed the Subaru community by blowing the whistle on this kid. I'm sure every Subaru dealer in America is on the watch out now and it's going to be severly hard to get anything warrantied, much like it was for this window case.
Peace, please feel free to PM me if you want to flame, let's keep this one clean. I'm not attacking anyone, just bringing up points I think that need to be brought out. I respect all opions including bagging on the kid, because he really did something that was not right.
Thanks for listening.

I went to my dealer a couple of days ago to ask about warranty issues with modded cars and the service technician told me that Subaru has sent out a bulletin to dealerships asking them to write down serial numbers and take pictures of all modifications they see on vehicles. He wouldn't even say for sure that the prodrive muffler would not void the warranty if used on the street! I completely agree that if I screw up, I should deal with the expense, but I would be very disappointed if they refused ALL warranty service - Oil changes? c'mon...

HAHA you guys all owned yourself. Shake each other's hands as the snitch's obviously weren't thinking about others when they did this heroic act. I guess I'll tell my sister's b/f not to get a WRX now as its clearly not a delaer-mod friendly car.

Guys, I gotta jump in here and back up what Brian said. Although I am not one to support screwing the system, I am honest enough to know that if I was faced with a repair bill of such a magnitude, I would probably try do the same. I mean, what would you do if you have a 6K repair bill....Please don't tell me that the thought of returning your car to stock would not cross your minds.....Whether it is right or wrong is for nobody here to judge. Just put yourself in the other person's shoes... It is a shame that some people here have to resort to preschool antics of "telling" on others..... The way I see it, what occurred between that guy and the Subaru dealerships/SOA was absolutely NONE of our business.... If he got away with it, good for him. If he got caught, then more power to him as well for trying.
I just found it really sickening that some people would do this to one of "our own"...
I am not so sure that the all of this talk about being denied waranty because of unrelated mods was a good excuse to tell on him because I am sure that 90% of us here have had no problems of the sort. What you guys seem to forget is that it is not ALL WRX owners in the USA that log on forums like here to chat.. You guys (that live in the US) are a TINY subset of WRX owners in the US.....
A lot of people who have mods on their cars run catless turboback exhausts.... But why is it that nobody is running to the EPA to rat them out?????
Its seems that some people here think that what is good for the goose is not good for the gander....
Now, the heat is on you guys and your cars..... I am just happy that I don't live in the US, but in Canada right now.....

I suggest that anyone who has had warranty coverage denied read this: www.enjoythedrive.com/content/?id=8124
If the aftermarket parts did not cause the problem, the dealer should not be able to deny a warranty claim.

Magnussen / Moss act REQUIRES that the dealer honor the warrantee unless the aftermarket part can be proven to have caused the damage. There is NO SUCH THING as a "voided" warrantee.
If a dealer turns you away, inform them that your next call will be to a lawyer or that you will see them in small claims court. They are legally bound to fix anything that can't be linked to the modification.

I've been reading all the stuff you guys have been writing and just had to reply. I have been an auto mechanic at a chrysler/jeep dealer for 9 years. I have replaced dozens of engines under warranty that have had there oil changed every 30k miles or so. M ost of the cars are 2 year old ragged out pieces of junk. They could just as easily told the people no, (and sometimes they do) but usually dont. I could go on all day with all the physical damage items I have replaced under warranty. My point being.... If the guy next to you at a light in his Intrepid got his engine replaced under warranty when its failure was a direct result of him not changing his oil(something every knows to do), is it all that bad that someone who made a mistake and didn't know any better got his warrantied?
With all that being said.... lets hope we all know better.

And I agree with you - Narc's Ain't Cool. Ever. IMHO, anyway, And I have like 2 posts on this forum neway so it's not like it matters.
There was a lot more loyalty on Maxima.org.

He's right here. Look into the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Unless the car manufacturer proves that your aftermarket parts caused the problem they have to cover the warranty. And if it's an extended warranty you should call your states board of insurance, they can probably help you out.

Extended Warranty
Hey guys,
Ever thought of an extended warranty? I currently have this through my insurance company (Geico) not Gecko <-----cheap advertisment...
Well anyways I only pay an extra $11 a month and they cover anything the factory will not. Just food for thought guys. Also before you start knocking my post every insurance company is different so this may not apply to you.
