Unhappy Installed New Turbo now new problems

Okay. I had an earlier post where mentioned it sounded like my turbo went bad. I got a used one with 10k on it (car has 70k) and replaced the turbo. It got rid of the original sound but now has a new sound. It sounds like the wastegate is banging or shuddering — you can especially hear it off throttle waiting for the rpms to drop. When we disconnected the hose that connects to the wastegate actuator we didn't feel any pressure positive or negative in that vacuum line.

What are the possibilities or where to look next.

I feel that the boost solenoid isn't working properly — if it isn't would it throw a check engine light?

I have helix up and down pipes. And everything else is stock.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a boost gauge? If so, what is it registering? If the solenoid went out, you would likely only be seeing 7-8 psi of boost instead of the normal 14 or so. A bad solenoid will not trigger a CEL.

Wastegate flutter is normal and easily heard with an aftermarket downpipe. That may be what you are hearing.

My other turbo didn't make the same noise with the same dp installed. I had a mechanic look at it today he said that there might be shaft play causeing the sound. It seems to be a lot louder than a flutter.

Thanks Egan.

Well.. I took it to Subaru and they said the turbo was fine. They got down to it and couldn't find any shaft play. I was skeptical. So I called up my buddy who races in American Iron and he hooked me up with a friend of his who does alot with Turbos and Superchargers. I went to him and he took the car out and listened to the noise and described it as "Tinny" and a noise that turbos just don't make. He said its most likely a heat shield vibrating and it shouldn't be anything to worry about — not to mention that it could take for ever to locate the culprit. So I guess it is fine.

Thanks for all the help.
