Improving Turbo
Hello- I posted this question before but I guess I didn't phrase it right and didn't get anywhere.
I've done most of the logical exhaust mods and a couple of handling mods. Specifically, catless up and downpipe, catback exhaust, wheels/tires, and F&R swaybars. Cobb stage 2 ECU.
I am assuming that the next mods should work on upgrading the turbo. But beyond that I'm clueless- assuming that assumption itself is true.
I'm willing to pay any reasonable price, but would prefer to get a kit or series of upgrades to put on all at once. I'll have the dealer install it.
So... what do the experts think I should do? My goal is to increase boost. Improved handling is nice too but I think that might be better for another forum.
Thanks in advance!

What are your goals for power? VF34 is a nice upgrade for overall and quick spool, the AVO 320hp is a favorite, VF23 perhaps. Any of those will work fine with the mods you have if you keep the boost below 18psi, without having to replace injectors or go back to Cobb for ecu reprogramming. An intercooler upgrade would be nice too. AVO or APS have some nice TMIC replacements.

IMHO get a vf23 and sti injectors then send the ecu in to Cobb. The reflash is just $20 plus s/h  . On the other hand, I've heard good things about replacing the intercooler hoses.
Of course, you could get the sti tranny and motor mounts, and short shifter+bushings. They really tighten up the drivetrain and feel great. Haven't tried the pitch stop, but I heard its a b**ch to install.
Personally I like the ride of the WRX with the stock struts and beefed up swaybars, but then, I'm old.
Hope that helps

A goal of "improved boost" means nothing.
You need to specifically say you want to achieve xx.xx times on the 1/4 mile or do better in auto-x, or kill a few C5 vette's on the freeway.
Personally I think with your current setup, you are already quite a fast car. If a bigger turbo is in your future, you will also need injectors, and a remap or some other form of engine managment.

I think its only best if you get all these when going to a bigger turbo;
()=my suggestions and what i currently run
Bigger Injectors (STi)
Larger Fuel Pump (Walbro 255lph)
And a form of engine management (UTEC; but a Cobb Reflash would have been my second choice)
If you notice, there is usually a package with all these things in one. I'm sure you can run one with-out the other but you won't be gaining the amount of HP you should be...
Adding the Turbo, Injectors, and Fuel Pump to your current mods is equivalent to a TurboXS stage4, so you can take a look at the dyno plot of a Turboxs Stg4 on their website to get an idea of your gain...
And like teiva-boy says, set a goal for yourself so you know where your headed...

Thanks that helps. I got my butt kicked by some kind of generic ford* today so I'm gonna think some more about the AVO 320. Saw it for $1575 somewhere. Or the VF23 (VF34? Haven't looked for that yet).
*The guy got the jump on me, granted but I couldn't even gain on him by the time I got close to 60 in a 40 mph zone and that is as far as I'm willing to take it.

how come nobody ever mentions head work for the rex? especially with forced induction...I would tackle head work before the turbo upgrade. I'm guessing its good for at least anothe 40HP and make the motor even more efficient when mated with a larger turbo.

Just curious how much do you think head work would cost and you would also have to know some one who is going to do the job right. i bet any old machine shop could do it, but to do it correctly would be something i would be concerned with.

I know that Cobb does heads on an exchange basis. Other places do porting and polishing work. FI , Quantum racing will rework your throttlebody for a very reasonable price. Somebody was talking about porting and polishing the heads over on NASIOC, but I cant' seem to find it right now.

Question of supreme ignorance to follow...
Please click on something else if you're faint hearted about dealing face to face with ignorance.

There, I said it. Thanks in advance for your tolerance.
