importance of BOV?

at what point does the BOV become more than a sound enhancement?

my plans are to get the perrin IC hoses, an up-pipe, a TBE, and a cobb computer thingy, I already have the STI scoop.

so with these mods on my car, will I see any positive returns (other than the cool sound) from a BOV?

and (I can probably get this one through a search, but if someone wants to answer I would appreciate it) what are the typical gains that one receives from a BOV, I have read that it reduces boost surge, what is that, exactly and how does it harm the engine?

thanks for any and all answers!

There is a performance gain to be had IF you are running high boost, like 19 psi plus... but if you are doing that, you already have a turbo, complete exhaust, uppipe, injectors, pump, etc. etc.

The reason the car has a bypass valve (the proper term) is to protect the turbo from compressor surge. When you snap the throttle closed, the boost can't pass through it, causing a sudden spike in pressure between the compressor and the throttle body. This pressure slams into the compressor blades and eventually can cause damage to the turbo. That takes a lot of boost and repetitive use to really break things though.
