+1 Carlsen Subaru - Importance of wheels being balanced
So I've had this shimmy in my steering wheel over highway speeds and done multiple things to fix it.
1) Brought to Ron Price, was told flat spots, wheels out of balance so they balanced the tires and told me to replace tires. Unfortunately I had tires with good tread left and didn't want to change them out just yet so I drove on them for a few more months.
2) Took it to America's Tire in Fremont and had them balance all 4 wheels. Still not fixed.
3) Bought new tires from discountiredirect.com. Mounted new tires with balance at Tire Merchants in San Jose. Still not fixed.
4) Thinking it was something else since 3 places had balanced the wheels and nothing seemed to have changed, I thought it was something in the suspension or driveline so I take it to Carlsen Subaru hoping it would be covered under my extended warranty. They find out that my wheels are all slightly out of balance by half an ounce to an ounce. I just had the new tires mounted last week! They balance them and practically eliminate the shimmy and now I can drive on the highway w/o a vibrating hand massage. Unfortunately it cost me $135 to fix this which Ron Price should have done in the first place so I didn't need to buy new tires and spend more money.
Just goes to show that not all places put the same precision into balancing tires. Way to go Carlsen Subaru! -1 for Ron Price.

Since you had the new tires mounted at Tire Merchants, that negates both what America's Tire Co and Ron Price did. As all weights and tires are taken off the wheel. It could have been flat spots and your new tires fixed that and the bad balance could have been a new problem that resulted in the same feeling in the wheel.
Or Ron Price just didn't cut it. Glad to hear the vibration is gone as it's an annoying thing to have.
