I just test drove an '02 WRX, and it had exhaust, hi-flow cat, and blow off valve done by HP performance in MD/VA area.
Question is ......... the car whistled constantly ............ slightly annoying.
For thsoe with BOV, or lightly modded Rex's, is this normal??? I have not driven a modded turbo car before (only stock one's, and highly modded all motor cars).
Have a chance to get it for $17,000 from a dealer ............ need answers fast.
Tanks!

I agree with GR8-WRX. Tell the dealer to fix the whine. Tell him not to BS that its supposed to be like that or whatever story he might give you.

you say whistled constantly. do you mean the second you energized the ignition, or do you mean when you started the car and idled it, or when you put it in gear and motored away slowly, or when you mashed down the pedal and took off quickly, or when you decelerated?
it matters!

The hurry was me, had nothing to do with the dealer .....
I was going on a business trip yesterday, and leaving for a week vacation Friday. So I was on a tight schedule. Dealer had nothing to do with the hurrying.
The whistle is at about 1/3 throttle on, louder as I mash the throttle.
I figured it was the blow off valve, and talked to the shop that did the work (they didn't specifically remember the car, but recognized what I was explaining). They also said the same thing.
It is really noticeable when I am 1/2 throttle, and the boost hasn't built up as lot yet, the BOV sort of half releases (no "whoosh" just a chatter - not in a bad way, hard to describe, but I know it is doing what it is supposed to). It comes in conjunction with the BOV.
So when I get home tonight, I am probably going to tweak the BOV a little, and drive it around.
Obviously I bought the car ...

Should sound like this
WOT or a heavier foot: wwwwweeeeeehhhhhh
let off the gas: ttttttttttteeeeeeewwwwwhhhhh
if that's the case:
you're fine. maybe it has a hacked silencer too (snorkusoctemy) which is cool too. this will also make the BOV a tad louder.
relax and have a beer for me too.
If it's a WHINE when you TURN THE KEY then it may be a fuel line or another problem. i ran across a similar problem with my last car.
Be careful and DON'T let them rush you!!! It's your investment... not the dealers.

The noise you're referring to could be just turbo spool, as some turbos are just louder than others. Not a problem, though. The chattering is most likely from your BOV, as it's set to only open fully once a certain level of boost is attained. If you're only giving it half throttle and then let off the gas immediatly, you'll hear that chatter as the air can't escape through the BOV, and is forced backwards through the turbo and out the intake. Also not a problem, as long as you don't hear it at any more than about half throttle. Most BOV's have an adjustment on them to loosen or tighten the spring as needed.
