Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

I dont know?........you tell me!

OK, for starters, i have an 02' WRX with 43,000 miles that has a Perrin DP & Up pipe (catless) along with a 5Zigen exhaust, Injen intake, GFB BOV (set at 50/50) and thats about it except for a couple of cosmetic goodies!

My scenario........I just got my PA emissions test, no visual/sniffer test required, just an OBD II computer check. Well, i failed in 2 categories "catalyst system inefficiency" and an "EVAP Control System Vent Control Function Problem". I do have a pony express MIL installed properly and the 2.2k ohm resistor installed for the Up pipe. I just recently disconnected my battery to install a boost gauge, and in doing so i must have reset my ECU.

My Question...... I failed those 2 categories because the computer did not have enough suffecient data stored in the ECU yet. After i had the battery connected i drove about 60 miles.....what do i have to do to get those readings to be present?

My mechanic copied me the procedures (cycle) necessary to restore the proper ECU readings.....i did them and what a pain in the a**.......but i still didnt get any readings for those 2 categories. Do i have to just drive it more or what?

By the way i never had a CEL light except for the bogus loose gas cap that i had twice.

i have a theory it might not be right though, your running totally catless right? well if you have fixes on both 02 sensors then your computer is being blocked by them which is why you are not getting those two readings" because of the mil fixes" they confuse the computer into thinking that everything is hunky dorry... you might have to put your stock down pipe on to get through...just a thought i might be wrong though

The evap one should clear it self in due time, but the cat effency one will never clear out of the system with the resistor fixes and what not. In NJ you can have one OBDII rediness code not set, so the cat one alone and the car should pass. You may have an evap leak or something minor that isnt setting of a check engine light. I basically run the same set up as you and thats my situation.

I have to pass emissions by tuesday. thanks for your input scooby kid......i hope it doesnt have to come down to that! I might just run a full tank of gas thru it and give it another try....what do u think?

Are you telling me that no one else has this similiar setup and didnt have to pass emissions.

That is what i was thinking too..... He did the gas cap check, which passed. Being from PA i can have one fail code or "not ready" code to still pass. I heard of the MIL elim. sometimes causing the ECU to have problems taking a reading so im guessing that is what the cat effeciency is all about. just the EVAP im kind of curious about. If i can get that to take a reading i would be alright.

Its just a matter of driving until the car is ready. I know the OBDII drive cycle, but there are certain parts to make each readyness test go. You could still pass if you can get your evap evaluation to pass. So I would put a bunch of miles on the car. Any one with a generic OBDII scan tool can check your redyness states before you waste your time going and failing the state inspection.

I think that is exactly what i am going to do......go thru the drive cycle once more...put approximately 500 miles on the car and then take it to Auto Zone to see if they can hook up the OBDII scanner and check if it took all its proper readings. I hope that does the trick! Thanks for your input New2MeSuby you have been alot help. I will post the results when i get back from Autozone.

There's two different things here. Auto Zone probably checked for DTC's which you probably passed if your check engine light isn't on. Then there's Rediness codes which are built into the cars computer. They are in the generic OBDII section of the scan tool (ford and kia based tools that I know). When all items have been sucessfully run they will all say READY or PASS, if there is more that one NOT READY (in nj at least) you will not pass.

New2Me....so are you saying that it might be a wise idea to run back there tomorrow and specifically ask them to check for "readiness codes"! Thanks for headsup!

YEESSSS! I was driving by my mechanics shop tonight and noticed that he was still in the garage.....so i stopped in...... talked a little bulchit....... he then said "lets give another test". So we did! sure enough it passed! with only one incomplete reading.....The EVAP must have received a result. Awesome! thanks to everyone that replied back about my situation..
