How Much Restriction From Stock Muffler?
My current set up is a 3" HKS DP connected to a fabricated 3" resonator pipe. I'm planning to replace the axle-back pipe with a 2.5" pipe. I want to leave the stock muffler on, because I don't want the coffee can look and can't afford an aftermarket axle-back right now like a Stromung or MRT. Whats the HP difference between my set-up and the same set-up with an aftermarket axle-back? Thanks for your inputs

sounds like...
you may build up some back pressure there, becuase u are opening everything else up, except for the muffler. As a result of increased back-pressure, you are more than likely to get some fumes into the cabin, since there is not enough "room" for all the exhaust gasses to escape.
Might want to add a straight pipe, of find someone with a used "performance" muffler to avoid the above situation.
My $0.02.

straight pipe
= without muffler. When you add the 2.5" axleback, get an extention pipe, and that will replace the muffler.
Ask WRX Grl (can't remember if that's her ID) but she has a set-up with a mufflerless system.

I know that Infineon and Sacramento Raceway requires a muffler.

Hey Blackwagon, I'm going to be putting a magnaflow (straight through) muffler on my car. I'm having a it welded directly to the stock axle back piping (it has a 2.25 inlet and duel 2" outlets, just like stock, I'm gonna put the stock tips on it too). I'm not looking for a huge hp increase but I wouldn't mind a better sound and a cleaner flow, while keeping the stock look. I'm dumping the cat in the midpipe and uppipe, too, so I wanted something a little less restrictive without breaking the bank. At a local muffler shop it's $78 for the muffler and $50 for the install. So only about $130 for an axle back.

Hi Silver arrow,
the part is Magnaflow muffler #12148
It's a 5X8X14 oval with a 2.25" inlet and dual 2" outlets (I believe that factory tips should bolt right on). Its list price is about $90 but one of the local shops quoted me $78 plus install ($35 for the cut and weld plus $10 per hanger). I'm going to have it installed on monday so I can let you know what I think of it then.

Silver arrow,
well, I got my new magnaflow muffler installed. It turned out to be $160 installed because it wan't quite as simple as simply cutting off the old muffler and welding on the new. There was a little pipe to bend and add on. Plus all three hangers had to be replaced.
Anyway, they did a great job. I have tons of room for my sway bar now. And it sounds great. Although, I'm hoping my wife isn't going to kill me. It has a nice deep rumble at idle and low rpms but is quite subdued at freeway cruising speeds and not too loud at wot (you can hear the engine over the exhaust). I've gotten used to the difference but my wife hasn't heard it yet. I barely managed to talk her into it.... Hopefully she won't mind...too much. Its not THAT loud, but it is a lot more noticable that stock (which was hardly noticable at all). It certainly won't drown out converstation or your radio... but you are definitely aware of it... great sound though. Real nice rumble with the flat four. And I reinstalled the factory tips (I did have to snip some of the metal that goes around pipe on the inside though, to make them fit) so it looks pretty stock. But it is not really a stealth system. The person in the car next to you will notice if they are into those sort of things. One thing I did notice was that I wasn't turning heads when I was casually driving around my neighborhood. And as for performance, it's hard to tell at this point. I still haven't installed my uppipe or midpipe, so all I have is my mbc... the boost does seem to come on a bit quicker after about 5psi... but maybe it's all in my head.

Thanks for the info. I am really looking for a muffler to add power but not be loud at WOT. I've heard the Stromung and in my opinion it is too loud. I've also heard to TurboXS and it is just a tad too loud. I'm wondering if a TurboXS with a resonator would do the trick? Anyone have any suggestions for cat or axle back that is quiet. I already have a Perrin downpipe and an uppipe and no third cat. Just need a quiet axle or cat back. HELP!!!!!!!

Siver arrown,
As for the turboXS muffler, from what I hear it's made by magnaflow so I'm sure it will sound very similar to the magnaflow I had installed. They are all straight through pipes. You can look in one end and see right out the other. A hell of a lot restrictive than the stocker. By the way, I went out to test my new prodrive springs I just installed and definitely notice a difference with the new muffler. When on boost over about 4500 rpms there is a whooshing sound in addtion to the enging and exhaust. I don't know if it an exhuast sound or what but it does seem to rev faster and there is definitely a difference in the butt dyno. I very interested to see what happens when I install my gutted uppipe and midpipe tomorrow.
If you are looking for a nice quiet muffler with decent performace gains you should try the greddy. From what I hear it is one of the quietest mufflers out there and a good performer. I think it's a cat-back and runs about $550 or something. I would love one, but for the dough I'm pretty happy with my magnaflow.

I've got a straight pipe catback on my 02, looks good, sounds awesome, performance is probaby up a few horsepower, and I have to constantly watch out for police now even when driving slow. And the setup is cheap, probably $60 at a muffler shop for the piping and a stainless steel tip. Good times
