When I bought my WRX from dealer and the finance manager was going over the car, I think she said 5 or 7.

Why do I ask? I was talking to friend and told this to him and he found this hard to believe. I wanted to know for my knowledge.

Can anyone from Subaru chime in?

Gdogg?

Thanks

It's got a metal substrate cat in the up-pipe. And two in the down-pipe/mid pipe sections. I'm pretty sure the later two are of the conventional material (not metal substrate). However, my car only has two now. Stock up-pipe cat and a hi-flow metal substrate cat in my Cobb down-pipe...boost comes on soooooooo much quicker...(With Stage 2 map of course).

3 cats. 1 in the up-pipe. 2 in the downpipe (1 in each portion of it).

Without getting into a long off-topic rant about emissions testing, Subaru uses three cats because it was the most cost-effective way to control cold-start emissions on the U.S. WRX. Same reason why our WRXs have tumble generator valves. U.S. emission laws are probably the strictest in the world. The EPA test cycle is much more complicated than your neighborhood smog test station. This is what manufacturers have to submit their vehicles to. It includes a driving test segment and instrumented data logging. That's a political topic more suited to the Car Lounge forum.

In addition to what Wingless said, Subaru found it more space/cost efficient to use 3 smaller cats that clean the emmissions in steps rather than 1 large traditional cat that did it all at once.
