HORRIBLE Gas Mileage... Need Help

like it says, ive been getting horrible mileage. i use to get about 26 miles per gallon on staright highway. now i get like 21 going about 75-80.

in the city, i use to get about 16-17 miles now im getting about 13. this was coincidentally after i put on my pirelli p zero neros m&s with rota tarmacs. after they were installed, the mileage slowly went down. to wat it is now.

my mods are a turbo back, up pipe, cobb stage 2, and k&n filter on a 2002 WRX sedan.

I changed the plugs to platinums from denso.... 1 step colder. didnt do anything to help. does the 02 wrx have a gas filter? i tried using an injector cleaner and it did help for like a week but then it went back to normal.

BAN SUVS.... u helped me out a few times... any suggestions??

i only have like 19000 miles.

I WISH YOU GUYS COULD FEEL ME!!!!!!

it hurts so bad now. by the time i hit the 1/4 tank mark, i only have about 130-150 miles!!!!! i dont have a heavy foot just because of this crappy mileage. i was reving to about 3500-4000 rpms when the mileage was good and it didnt hurt me much. but since this stuff started happening, i reve to 3000-3200 rpms before i shift and still nothing.

if you guys have any friends or parents who know anything about cars, feel free to ask them and get back to me. i dont mind..... at all.

thanks for the input so far.... and the cheap cracks.....

now that i calulated it..... im actually getting about 11-14 miles per gallon city driving without any traffic or stop and go traffic.

hmmmm...... could it be that since its so damn cold here that the mileage is going bad? im getting that gas smell in the morning sometimes too. but even before it got cold, it's been acting like this too.

When did this start? I know my gas mileage drops like crazy with the winter fuel.

Check the routine stuff first like maintaining the proper inflation in your tires. Are the tires all wearing evenly? If not, have the alignment checked. A fresh alignment is the order of the day anyway when new tires/rims are installed.

Inspect the MAF to check for an oil film that may have built up slowly from drawing air through your K&N filter element. I doubt this is the case since I assume the car runs great other than the fuel economy, though. Run your finger inside of the intake path after the K&N filter (but don't touch the MAF sensor). Is there an oily film? It should be clean and dry, with possibly a very fine layer of dust, if anything.

Yes, the WRX has a fuel filter. It's the canister located in the engine compartment. Normally, most cars can rack up more miles than you have before it needs replacement but all it takes is one tank of water-laden fuel to cause a restriction and poor running.

Any CELs?

thanks wingless. u and and ban suvs ar ealways great help. i have my tires inflated to 36/34 front and rear. its way too cold to do anything to my car right now so ill have to check the MAF later on when it gets warmer. alignment is good. had it done a back in november. tires wear evenly also and the last 7k miles. thanks for all the info.

im always paranoid about bringin my car to the dealer cuz im on a budget paying for school and everything. if i bring my car into a qualified mechanic, do you think they will be able to fix this mileage thing? im worried that they will do watever they think is necessary and then when i realize it didnt do anything to help my mileage, its just gonna seem like a waste of money.

should i bring it to subaru or a very honest and reliable mechanic shop around here?

Check for obvious things such as fuel leaks, replace your fuel filter. The other thing to check out would be your front O2 sensor.... if its reporting impropperly, you might be running rich all the time. Gas milage always decreases in the winter... party the cold weather and partly the winter gas.

thanks. the only thing i plan on doing right now is changing the fuel filter. i dont know if its a fuel leak but from what i heard from all the threads here, could the prbolem also be the smell of gas in the mornings???? i thought i read that the fuel line would leak fuel or something during the real cold winters which is why some of the 2002 models would smell gas in the car.

also, dunno if this plays a factor. but i made a mechanical checkengine light fix for the dp o2 sensor but never had any problems with it (used 2 of the spak plug non foulers??? from the HELP!!! line of parts). also, i dont get any checkengine lights related to any of the o2 sensors. but since im running no cats, the car smells really rich during cold starts but is basically gone when the car warms up.

Basically the same setup as you.. turbo back..3" with cobb stage 2. I have the accessport.. and even when I set it to economic.. the ****ing think drinks like a ****... this just started happening after this new year when I came back from vacation (left the car sitting in the street for 3 weeks). The thing is no where economic right now.. so I just leave my map at stage 2 CA..

Alll might be because I am foot heavy... .

Man, thats horrible. I'm running:

Cobb's Stage 2 93 oct
helix uppipe and downpipe
hks hi-power exhaust
Perrin drop panel filter
Perrin lightweight crank pulley

...and other stuff, but those are the parts I've changed with the motor. Anyways, I'm getting around 21-23mpg in the city and around 26-29mpg on the highway. Just depends on how much of the throttle I use. When I was living in SC, I ran through the mountains with my foot on the floor most of the time through a full tank of gas and got 16 or 17mpg. I'd definitely keep looking into it. I would be supprised if your fuel filter was already dirty, but anything is possible. I'm going on 39k with my Suby and still haven't replaced it. I would lean more towards checking your MAF sensor, especially since you have the K&N filter. The oil from it likes to be pulled though the intake and I really think it's collecting on your sensor. Maybe I missed it, but did you try resetting your ECU? If I mess around with the MAF at all, I usually end up resetting the ECU, just because there have been times where I haven't and the car runs like crap. Just some thoughts to help you out
