It's a good idea to have a heat shield on there. Things get pretty damn hot otherwise. I got the original Speedmonkee heatshield and I like it a lot.

I agree, a heatshield is a good idea. Especially considering how close the turbo is located to the top mount intercoller. I bought a Cusco heatshiled for about $60. Can't remember where from, though.

Yeah, i've got the original speedmonkee one as well. They've got one now with a chimney that takes a suction off of the hood scoop to assist in cooling the turbo!

wrx guy: The other guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but we're talking about the heatshield that sits atop the turbo itself, kinda between the turbo and the intercooler. Basically the one you have to remove to access the DP bolts. Kepp in mind with that new chimney heatshield that you have to retain an intercooler of the stock dimensions in order for the chimney part to clear it.

Yes, yelobean40 was referring to the turbo heat shield that is clearly visible near the intercooler.

It's a good idea to retain the heat shields whenever possible. Subaru put them there for a reason and could have saved money by leaving them off. The heat shields help to retain heat in the exhaust, which keeps the velocity of exhaust gasses high for good power, while making sure the catalytic converters are at 'light-off' temperature. All help to keep heat from radiating to nearby components such as the intercooler and your firewall/floorboards.

If the factory turbo heat shield can't be retained due to size of upgraded exhaust or turbo, look for an aftermarket heat shield or try to fabricate one.
