Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Gutted everything and stock muffler - How's it sound?

I had a catless exhaust (uppipe and downpipe)with the stock muffler and resonater and it was still super quiet but did sound a little deeper.

Yes. Im currently running a stock catback along with my Vishnu uppipe and ERZ downpipe, all cat-less. I've had people ask if I've got a full exhaust on there, but just like VIBEELEVEN said, it's really not that loud, just alittle deeper. I'm definately replacing my stock catback simply to free up the exhaust gasses.

I'm about to do this same thing on saturday...sounds about right but I have the STi catback from a friend's '04 STi.

The '04 STi made the idle to 1K RPM burble much more pronounced so I hope to get a tad bit more sound from this mod...obviously I'm doing this more for the power though.

It's deeper and you can hear alot more of the mechanicals like turbo spool, wastegate, etc. Think stock on steroids.

OK now WITH an UP and DP installed (all catless) I am hearing a DEFINITE turbo spool so loud that it overpowers the actual exhaust sound until about 4K RPM!

That's right 4K

at idle it is audibly louder with a nicer burble to it. Pretty cool I think.

If you want cheap boxer sound and don't mind being on the loud side, you can go straightpipe from axleback, no need to butcher your cats or your muffler. But this will be a bit loud, but it sounds oh so good...
I actually have one that looks nice and I can sell if you like. (I loved the sound, but I'm too old to handle it!) Just unbolt your muffler and drive around for a bit, see if you like it first.

I have this setup and it is MUCH LOUDER and much SLOWER than a stock setup with all cats removed. The mongo sized muffler really cuts out a ton of sound, so even without cats it's still quite quiet. With the straightpipe axleback though, the muffler delete means lots of sound but only minimal performance gains (unlike removed cats).
