You're partially right. It is in reference to octane. So pure octane would yield a rating of 100, but several substances have a higher octane rating than octane itself does (confused yet?). Toluene, methanol, Xylene, lead as an addative, etc... all have octane ratings well over 100.

MOST gas with an overall rating over 100 is leaded. I've seen a few 101 and 103 mixes that are unleaded, but the vast majority are leaded.
