Exhaust question (catless and cat-equipped WRX downpipes)
Exhaust Question
Ok,
So, for my '04 wagon, I got an Invidia TBE with Helix catless uppipe and Greddy Evo Tip, since it was quieter than the dual tip Invidia.
Now, neither my gf nor some of my friends will ride in it, complaining that it stinks, particularly when stuck in traffic or at a light, or they say I'm polluting (never mind the old cars and diesel trucks I see everyday). To me, the smell is far better than after the first day stuck in rush hour traffic, after it had been reflashed and run on the dyno.
Also, with that big tip, though I love the sound, I'm getting paranoid dodging the politzi as I cruise around. So, I'm looking for suggestions including changing the tip to a dual, to look like stock. Not the obvious suggestions like get rid of gf, that's not an option lol. And, I don't really want to go back completely to stock since I'd like to keep the Helix uppipe until it's time to smog in a few years.
For example, can you get a Borla Hush tip that you can attach to the Invidia? Or, do I consider putting the stock downpipe back on and getting a full Borla Hush catback (does the Borla have a high flow cat that comes with it?)
Or, do I just keep the car for my own driving and accept that I'm going to get stopped one day when that grant money finds it's way to the local copshop. )How many of you guys have been stopped for exhaust?)
Sorry for any potential ignorance with the questions, but wanted to float it out there. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Honestly, there's little point to putting your stock downpipe back on the car and using a catback. The idea behind have a full TBE is getting that 3" pipe all the way back to reduce the restrictions. The option I would go with is selling your downpipe and purchasing a B&B downpipe that is catted. The only thing that sucks about the B&B is that the cat is relatively small so it doesn't grab all the attention you might want it to when a cop is looking under the car, and aftermarket cats (this is per Nate) have a tendency to break apart in relatively short order. That is not a B&B thing, that's an aftermarket cat thing.
My best advice would be to get your friends and gf to ride in the car more often. When I was running full catless the only time I ever noticed the smell is when I would stop at a stop sign or stop light or when I was backing up. Maybe with time your friends and gf will get used to it.
And it cracks me up when people get mad at you for polluting :rotfl:. It's so cute.
lol, I was going to recommend this. Well, you can still get rid of your friends. Just come to a meet and you'll make new ones

Appreciate the advice, guys. Yeah, maybe it's time to trade in the old friends lol
Question: Can you put an aftermarket cat in an Invidia DP? Or, do you have to buy a catted dp? btw- thanks for the advice Sonic, I'll chat with Nate and Joe this week. Also, awesome pics of the last meet..........everyone must have their Subie garaged and pampered as those autos are clean! When and where are the weekly meets?
I was looking at those friggin oil/fuel fragrances, but I'll probably be pulled over for smelling like cinnamon or hit upon by some alternative lifestyle boyz lol
Finally, I just dusted the hell outa a Nissan Altima 3.5 in the Delta this afternoon. I need some track time to improve the skillz!!!

If you try to put a cat in to a non catted dp it will require the dp to be all cut up and the cat welded in. I was going to try and run a cat with my invidia dp -> perrin catback, however Nate would have had to hack up the Perrin and then weld the dp to one end of the cat and the other end to the perrin, basically making my whole exhaust one piece. I didn't want that. It will be a better idea to purchase a catted dp.

i have a turbo-back, and the only smell that i have ever smelled in my time having the car, is a mild whiff of burnt gas... nothing bad though, it smells like i mean business... no one has ever said anything or asked about the smell..
my suggestion to you.. just get a high-flo cat on your down pipe... as for your car being to loud... put some dynamat in the trunk area so that it will quite down the exhaust note inside the car...
