Engine Noise
Engine Noise
Hey all,
I have this weird engine noise coming from the drivers side...The noise seems to be coming from near the belts, but not the belts itself.
Noise can be described as a whinning/tapping/clickety sound....hope it's nothing internal.
Have any of you experienced a similar sound, in the same general area of the engine bay? If so, what was the reason(s)?
This is a pain in the a$$, as I was getting geared up to finally install the to-be-installed mods this week....

I can clearly hear it during idle, but only slightly under load, as the exhaust and other engine noises interfere.
One thing that I had done (about a week prior to the start of the sound) was add a different weight oil. Added the different weight oil since the oil level went low and did not have access to the exact stuff 10w-30 only about a quarter of a quart, though.
This wouldn't have such a negative effect on the engine....would it?

i recently changed my oil (i use 10w30) and while warming up the car after the oil change i was listening to my car during idle and heard some weird engine noises.
I had a local shop check it out and they said it was fine. It was most likely just my valvetrains getting loud since i had so many miles on the car. (roughly 110k)
So that could possibly be what you're hearing as well. How many miles do u have on your car?

I just got off work, and went to go listen to the noise again, with a friend this time, and we concluded that the noise is coming from the AC Compressor.
Has anyone else had an issue with their AC Compressor dying so soon - 50k miles?

o.k. I took the car to SpeedElement for them to take a quick look at the car (underhood) this noise also puzzled them - I really appreciate the quick-look at the car Speed Element.
Today I had some time to take a closer look at the car; took off the timing belt cover, and found the problem, metal Shavings/Peels all over the place.....The problem is one small bearing pulley had malfunctioned and just fell apart.
I will post pictures up in a little while.
One additional item I will need help with is, which part number this piece is and where do I get it?

Unstabe, in the future when you're trying to find the source of engine noise, a good trick is to get a long bit of wood (eg. wooden broom handle) and place it on the part you suspect. Then put your ear onto the wood anywhere along it. Noise travels really well up the wood and you'll find the source in no time
Good luck with the pulley
Good luck with the pulley
I found the part number (13073AA200) and have already installed it, and the car runs nice and smooth now
The item description is Idler Compl-Belt
Hope I put everything back the right way, or I may be posting for other parts soon......

can't find the camera to computer cord, but I did find a post that shows the almost the exact shots I took: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...php?p=21161170
The only thing I did for this, was remove the stripped out cylinder and bolt, then replaced it with a new one.....didn't have to mess with the belt at all.
Get the broom handle out and have a look/listen if it's coming from the same pulley.
I haven't changed my timing belt since I got my Impreza, but there should be a timing belt tensioner, did you reset this when you replaced the idler pulley? Or did you just replace the pulley and slip the timing belt back on? If you haven't reset it then maybe the belt tension is too high and this is what killed your first and now your second pulley prematurelly.
