EGT guage -- installation needs a hole into header for the sensor??

that's what I thought. I see many people drilling and tapping into the flat spot on that part of the manifold. I think that's where I am going to do it.

i've got mine tapped about 4-6 inches from cylinder 1 & 4. response is great. i have a greddy EGT gauge.

It's not really the response I am worried about it is the accuracy of the reading.
