Question Crank Pulley?

I'm getting ready to change my timing belt on my 02. I was considering to install
a lighter crank pulley. any recomendations on which brand, and does this effect the engine life? Is this worth the money?

I'm happy with my Perrin Crank Pulley! I think it's a great bang for the buck mod: faster throttle response, better MPG (in theory... not really noticable with my driving I guess). With the 02 you can really feel it because of the 2.0 vs. the 2.5 engines.

Supposedly there are no harmonic balancers built into the stock pulley, so replacing it with a lighter one shouldn't really cause any harm I think.

I've had a Vishnu alloy slightly underdriven crank pulley for many tens of thousands of miles. It's supposedly good for a handful of horsepower but I can't tell the difference with such a modest gain. The thing is dependable and hasn't shortened the life of the engine (EJ20).

If you use a quality alloy pulley that isn't underdriven, that will eliminate any concerns if you have an aftermarket sound system and like to crank on it at idle.

I have been told that there is a harmonic balancer in the stock pulley, this is why I'm concerned, I was told by a tech that the harmonic balancer is placed in the stock one because the tolerances for the OEM stuff isn't very exact, and that the Perrin, for example, has better tolerances. Shouldn't the wobbling be a concern for wear issues?

thanks for the post, the debate on the harmonic balancer seems to continue in the post, I would wonder what a suby tech says about this.
