Cold weather problems
This morning It was very cold (-30c)and as always my car was out all night in it. I went to start it and almost instantly a very stong smell of gas filled the cabin. I looked under the hood and couldn't see any gas dripping. The way it smelt inside I expected a puddle on the floor! The car is going back to the dealer, but has any one of you cold weather people have had this problem?
The clutch release bearing didn't like the cold at all as well.

I had the same problem during cold weather, and didn't even park my car in the garage for fear that it could catch on fire. I took a good look under the hood and underneath the car and found no leaks. I called the dealer and they said that it was common problem to smell a strong gas odor at start up in cold weather. The explanation that was given was the car dumps a lot of gas in cold weather to start up and the positioning of the ventilation intake is in an area where the fumes can get into the car easily. They said they had no fix for it yet.

I found an TSB (Tech. Service Bulletin) on this exact problem on NASIOC. I'm taking my car to the dealer today. From reading some of the other related threads I've been hearing about this problem, this should be fixed for free regardless of warranty.
This isn't an issue that can be created because of mod, this is a flaw in design. Not to mention a potential fire hazard every time you start up the car. I printed out the TSB and I'm going to take it to the dealer for back up.
I pretty sure that I won't have to pay anything, I bought the car from them two months ago (already modded) and were are still negotiating my warranty so hopefully they'll take care of me. I'll let you know next week.
"I was wondering if anyone could explain how, why, and where, the rex would "dump" gas during clod weather. Somehow this doesn't seem correct.
Has anyone experienced a leeky injector or fuel rail on the wrx?"
From reading the threads, it's not due to a leaky injector or fueil rail. It has to do with the pipe and hose size, that align the two fuel lines, being too short. In cold weather the gas vapors rise through the gaps and enter the cabin.
Hope this helps.

Took the car to the dealer and they took care of me like I expected. They were aware of the problem and I don't have to pay for anything. The only drawback is that I have to leave the car at the dealership for a couple days. They had to order the parts.
Hope you guys have the same experience as I did!

my problem I have had was this:
I left my car over night outside for the first time at a friends house and the weather w/ windchill was about -9 degrees..
and when i came out in the morning and started the car, it started fine, but my light for LOW FUEL came on.....
it would be normal IF i had low fule, but my gauge was reading a little below half. and then I shut off the engine and put it back on and it never came back.
DAMN weird because my friend has a 02 Sube and it happened to him and all the weird problems he has on his car I have the EXACT same problems on my 04. from speaker/door rattling on passenger side door, to have to close down the window and open it back up because of wind noise, to everything! Subaru is weird, but I still love them.

Stryder03 - You didin't have to pay anything?? My car has been in the shop over a week already and they haven't done anything b/c the parts still haven't shipped. They said they would ship Monday 1/19...we'll see. I asked the service manager about subaru issuing a recall and he said it was very doubtful. The soa rep has already said he'd cover half the cost (which to me is an admission of guilt). Any suggestions on how i can get them to cover the entire cost? At http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov, i found this same problem documented (i think it is problem # PE04002). I'm going to call 1-888-DASH2DOT later and have them document my complaint as well.

Micah-
Since then the service dept rep has told me that parts are on national backorder so I'm still waiting for the parts to come in. So now I'm driving the car because my parent's needed their car back.
When I picked up the car (Wed) they were trying to charge me for the parts (about $80.00) claiming that my warranty has expired and that my car was over 67,XXX. I told the rep that I was still in negotiations with my warranty (finance guy misquoted my original warranty) and that my car was 63,XXX. I also contested and said that since this is a "campaign" and that this recall wasn't caused by a mod, I shouldn't have to pay for anything and that a warranty should have nothing to do with this. And when I spoke to them about this issue on Friday, the cost of parts and labor were never discussed. I received their word that they would take care of me.
The rep I was dealing that day was unaware of the agreement I had with the manager so, after being informed, they zero'd out the charges and honored my request. So now I have in writing that I do not have to pay for parts/labor AND that I will be notified immediately when the parts come in.
Overall it turned out in my favor but it took some convincing. If you push hard enough they should take care of you. Subaru is responisble for eating the cost on this not you. Good Luck!

a little help
Would anyone like to weigh in on whether it is a good or bad idea if I use “generic auto parts store” fuel line (tubing) instead of the Subaru TSB parts for this fuel rail fix? (I'm talking about keeping the rail that's on there and just replacing the hoses.)
Not that I’m being cheap, my dealer said he doesn’t have any and I tend to think it will be weeks before they do. I should be able to replace the tubing with a longer one that has a tighter fit and new clamps?
I haven’t pulled the intake manifold off yet to actually see the hoses yet, is this crazy talk?
