Axle-back replaces only the rear section of the stock exhaust system leaving the stock restrictive mid-pipe in place.
A cat back replaces the the mid-pipe and the axle-back.
Of course, cat-back give you more performance gains.

I don't think the rear exhaust pipe (aka rear midpipe) is very restrictive. The muffler is the weak spot in the catback equation. I'd rather buy the muffler and use the extra $150 (?) and buy a rear sway bar. Just my opinion, though. Actually, if your just looking for exhaust, get the muffler and spend the difference (compared to a catback) on a 3rd cat eliminator pipe (aka front midpipe). Stromung makes one. Just some more ideas!

low end power loss
Are you running stock? My first mod was a 3 inch HKS carbon ti, and the top end gains were minimal, while the low end saw a loss of power in a big way. I am switching to a 2.5 inch axle back system to avoid low end power loss. Full turbo back after warranty is gone. you really will only gain a few horsepower from a catback system. turbo back is the way to go if you don't care about warranties

I am running stock for now with a possible upgrade to AccessECU stage 1 in the future. I am planning on keeping all my cats more because of environmental concerns than anything else. Low-end torque is much more important for daily driving than HPs, so it looks like 2.5" piping is the way to go.
I guess I am going to get a Prodrive axel-back eventually for the looks and the sound

Access ECU is made by Cobb Tuning www.cobbtuning.com
With a stock WRX and Access ECU you will be making around 260 hp.

Thanks, I have browsed their website but never encountered the ecu upgrade. I am looking for upgrades that I don't need to tune. I am not very experienced with tuning, and with the latest rash of stage 4 utec users blowing up their engines, I am very wary!
I just installed 2.5" Stromung turboback (one cat in the DP) and got the Cobb AccessECU Stage 2. What a difference! Tons of torque. The engine pulls hard all the way to redline. Every gear feels powerful, even fifth. Biggest bang for buck out there. Same goes for their stage 1. So glad I did my research before buying things like an mbc or uppipe. Cobb is the way to go if you don't want a user tunable ecu. Just plug it in and go!
