Catback exhaust? Or Cobb Ap and catted downpipe
Ok, so I saved just enough money to start modifying the exhaust.
I can either buy a brand new cat-back exhaust, or I can get a used Cobb accessport and a catted downpipe, and I just had a few questions before I make a decision.
This is for a 2004 WRX, Car is completely stock engine wise.
1) I know I will probably get better gains with an aftermarket catted downpipe and accessport. With this combo and my stock catback system, will I run into any mechanical problems without getting a protune? Or will I be just fine with the 'off the shelf base map' from the accessport?
Also I understand that an accessport would be able to get rid of any CEL that arises from the aftermarket downpipe, correct?
2) Or, should I just go with something more mild and get just a catback exhaust until I save up enough money for the dp,ap, and a pro-tune?
Will I run too rich, or too lean without a EMU for my catback??
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

just get a downpipe and uppipe for now. thats around 300-500 buckeroos. then save for about a month or two and get a catback. if you don't wanna do that then do it part by part starting with the accessport first. happy modding

P.S. I am running Up-pipe/Catted Downpipe, Cobb AP stock catback. No problems just get the CEL fix resistor and plug the hole for the up-pipe and downpipe for the 02 you'll be fine.
Good Luck,
Calvin

Thanks for the response guys.
But I thought getting a downpipe/uppipe without an engine management, would cause problems with the motor and what not.
How long did you guys run the dp/up for before you went ahead and got the accessport? Did you guys get pro-tunedafterward, or are you guys still on the base maps?
Yeah, I don't want to do anything stupid that would harm the car in the long run/
Oh and strider, Im around the east Oakland area, by Fremont High school

Its always a good idea to get EM first.. that way but other 2.0 owners will tell you its ok to get exhaust first..
The best MOD/advice would be to do a search/research that way you arent left with any doubt.

The AP still works wonders with your stock parts...I'm planning on getting a v.2 just for a little extra daily driving fun and all I have is an axle back and short ram intake.

Go with the AP first so when you do get the exhaust you can flash the stage2 until you get tuned. Better safe then sorry in my opinion and the gains from just the AP will be good enough to hold you over until you get the exhaust done up.
Or just wait it out until you have enough money to do it all at once. So you get the full effect all at one time... Yeah I'm more near Oakland High School near lake shore.
