Break in Period... How Long?
I just got an 04 WRX Wagon and was wondering what is the best way to break it in? I was told by the dealer to stay below 4000 rpm for the first 1000 miles. I was thinking on staying below 4k rpm until 3000 miles.
Are there any suggestions?

There are a bunch of theories, if you talk to hardcore race enthusiast, they say 600 miles. Then groove the car to your racing specs. But there are others that say 5,000 miles. Some say 1,000 miles. But if you want to be safe, I'd just listen to the dealer. Wouldn't hurt to run it hard though. I've never heard of the boxer engine blown up in the first 5k miles. I think it's made to get beat up.

The Impreza Owners Manual, page 8-2 (section 8, page 2) - new vehicle break-in.
I've also heard different opinions on break-in for new vehicles, but the factory recommendation is a safe one to follow. I think it's okay to accelerate but maybe at some level short of full-throttle, redline at each shift, type of driving. You don't have to 'grandma' the car, but maybe drive as if your grandparents were riding as passengers in your car.

There isnt a problem with the car at all. I was just wondering what was the best way to break in the car.

I spoke to an AutoX guy and he said 600 like you mentioned. He told me after 600 miles drive the car like you would drive on a regular basis, then HAMMER it, then back off a bit. Hey he had 2 cars that he did it with and with over 20k miles theystill run strong...

Yea, everyone has their own theory. I've even heard that if you hammer it right, it'll run a lot stronger, and only decrease engine life by a few thousand miles. Of course another theory =P. But a fact is that the more you race/hammer the car, the quicker somethin' will break.
I stayed under 4000 rpm for 1000 miles. It was torture.
I ended up breaking down (not the car) and hammered it at 920 miles. I figured that was close enough and I couldn't take it anymore.

Bagel I know how u feel buddy. I feel your pain. I already got impatient and gunned it a lil (500 miles in 3 days). I just wanted to know how it felt a lil and only ran it hard for a few seconds just to tease. the thing is what when I was done the car started to drive better... Weird huh? time to take it easy again
