Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

As it is the wife's car I need to keep it mild and under 275hp crank, and not loud.

I have shopped and I am very aware what is out there. But want to know what suits my needs best for BOV's. Id like to stay away from 100% atmosphere like RFL BOV's, but a little whoosh would be nice. It needs to:

1. Fit under the hood properly.
2. Work for my application noted below.
3. Not leak, as I had some experience with that on a 1.8T jetta, no matter how much I adjusted the recirculation valve.
4. be for 100% for spirited street driving (in the mountains), as I never track the cars.
5. Not make the wife hate me for playing with her car, but she does enjoy quick cars.

I have so far:
17" SSR Comps
HKS Carbon Ti Cat Back
Snorkus Remover
K&N Drop in.
Slotted Brakes (stock size), Green Stuff Pads

I'm currently installing the Hallman RX mecanical boost controller and will be running 2-5lbs extra boost, mostly 2 but I would like the 5lb option at times.

Thanks for any help

First off...I thought you said you wanted it to NOT be loud.....the HKS Carbon/Ti is a VERY loud exhaust.....I was gonna suggest a Borla Hush, or Stromung cat back....for two reasons....

1. they are both twin tip...so at a glance the "look" stock.
2. they are both throaty/healthy sounding, esp. at WOT, but not attention getting.

Secondly....I would strongly advice staying away from a Manual Boost controller. Esp. since you are gonna keep this a pretty mild car. The stock ECU can be reflashed with 2 different boost maps....and is actually an excellent way to control boost on a car that is mildly modded, up to about 22 psi of boost or 300+ WHP. Manual boost controllers are easy to adjust wrong and over boost the car.

ECUTEK is what you should go with IMHO. Thats what I have controlling my car....and I have a "hi boost" map at about 18psi, and a "low boost" map limited at around 9psi.

Not to mention, when you go to have the car tuned after installing your mods....its very likely that you will have to remove the boost controller before they can tune it anyways, as they tend to cause problems with Tuning software.

So yea, anyways, have fun with the ride, and Welcome to I-club!

bov

I would say Turbosmart 50/50 this bov actually increased my hp it holds the boost better than stock, i did a test i actually took out my turbosmart and put the stock recircuation back on and noticed a big loss of power then i put my turbosmart back on, i hit 199 hp, and 204 torque with the helix up-pipe, down pipe, cat-back, and my turbosmart 50/50 bov only.. ecu wasnt reflashed at all... hope that helps

when it comes to boost, 5lbs is actually alot....stock you are about 14.5psi, dont go much more than 17.5-18psi on the stock turbo (that is just about its limit), but yea, I believe the stock bypass valve can hold up to about 22psi, but I wouldnt go much more than that on it.

old habits die hard...

get over it bro manual boost controllers in a advanced ecu controled car is just stupied
but dont take my word for it
edgar,

and if you are hard skulled then look into vaus (eds) device to eliminate the partial throttle full boost issue that will end up killing your wifes car

"woosh"

If you want to hear a more pronounced sound from your stock bov without buying an aftermarket one, and quite possibly blow off too much boost for the power you are putting down, replace the ic hoses. When I replaced my ic hoses to a Samco Y pipe and found that there was a substantial difference in the decible level of the bov when it fired as well as a bit faster turbo spool.

Stock BOV is good for about 18 at least.. I would suggest the WORX Dual Stage adjustable BOV... great build quality, and adjustable as a 100, 50/50, or whatever you want...

Another suggestion to you, is instead of starting a thread regarding people experiences with a specific part... try the REVIEWS section of this forum, look up the parts you are interested in and read the reviews left by members who actually used the part and are talking about their experiences

very powerful tool if you ask me
