intake silencer mod... there is def something like that on scoobymods. i've wanted to do it, but my car is loud enough with my fartcan. Plus, i don't have a good jack.
quote: so an aftermarket bov has no functional purpose whatsoever? Can it not let engine revs drop faster during upshift?
nope. the aftermarket one works exactly the same....except it blows the air out to the ATM rather than back to the intake.
the OEM valve is good till about 18 PSI...after that you have to get another one because the OEM valve will start to leak, but you can get an aftermarket recirc valve...makes no sound....just holds more pressure.
the intake silencer mod is a waste of time. it makes your car about 5-10% louder, and that's all. no performance benefits. SOME people say you can hear the stock BOV better, but that's relative. you can hear it better than normally, but its still BARELY audible. if there's some traffic noise around you....or if you're going over 40MPH, the wind/road noise is enough to drown out the BOV sound with the silencer hack. if you really want to hear the turbo whine better just get an uppipe/downpipe. you'll definately hear more turbo/wastegate noise.
I don't get the fascination with noise. you don't hear people saying things like "i'm going to not grease my new bushings, so when I drive you can hear them squeak so everyone knows I have aftermarket bushings"....or "I'm going to install my brakes a little off so they squeal when I hit the brakes and people know I have aftermarket brakes"...but everyone wants the silly BOV noise....anyone who doesn't know much about performance mods (about 99% of the population) will just think your car's broken.

Is it true that the BOV releases the pressure in between shifts and this release of pressure allows the turbine to continue to spin rather than stopping suddenly. This sudden stop causes excessive wear. That's why the BOV extends the life of a turbo.
Besides the stock WRX doesnt have a BLOW OFF VALVE it has a BYPASS Valve. It can't be a BOV unless it can BLOW.
I have the WORX tuning BOV . I like it for the sound and I plan on safely modding my car to the point beyond 18 psi.

um....a bypass valve is exactly the same thing as a blow off valve...different names for the same thing. Ot BLOWS the air back into the intake. it does EXACTLY what you just said the BOV does. when you take your foot off the gas it opens and releases the pressure in the intercooler, and sends the air back to the other side of the turbo to be compressed again.
what you're talking about (backpressure between shifts) only happens in turbo kits that don't have a BOV....like aftermarket Honda kits.
heck....why am I trying to talk you out of it....if you want one...get it its your money, and your car, but don't delude yourself that it DOES anything. in fact since you go lean momentarily between shifts, when you get back on the gas there's a little motor stutter until the A:F ratio gets back to "normal"...this actually slows down your recovery between shifts.

buy a GFB (Go Fast Bits) Stealth FX, i have it and no problems with it at all..it's fully adjustable so you can run 100% VTA or Recirculate or 50/50 etc..you can also control how loud it is, you can make it sound like a stock bov with no sound at all and loud when wanted and you can the spring softness/hardness. The car hasn't stalled once since i've had it and shows no signs of it. When on 100% VTA it's one loud bov i would say as loud as a txs rfl, and the cool thing is that you can change the trumpet to change the sound. I highly recomend the GFB Stealth FX

I had a Stealth FX and it actually made my car run .2 seconds slower. BOV's never help performance and in some cases hurt it. I'd stay with stock but if you feel the need to change it, I have a Blitz (I needed to change it due to stock not holding boost at higher levels).
