Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

I have a question regarding this... IF you already have a Piggy back ECU (Xede or UTEC) or ECU reflash (ECUTek or Cobb), is this necessary?

In order for the reflash to control boost correctly, there is a different restrictor that they put inline.

This is true..... I bought the XEDE and for the boost to go above that of stock I had to do this mod. They ship this as part of the package with the XEDE. I ran the XEDE for a couple of weeks with out the restrictor pill out but didn't notice that much more power and an increase in boost. Once I swapped out the restrictor my boost went up a notch. The first time I floored it tho there was a boost spike (probably due to be boost control solenoid experiencing a different pressure) but that never happened again as the XEDE/ECU adjusted for it. Now I consistently have 1 psi higher ..... the way I see it, this mod is pointless without some sort of engine management because your stock setting will adjust the boost control solenoid to bring it back to stock boost levels .... =)
My current setting is Vishnu stage subzero
So I would say this is not a pointless mod ... but is complimentary to engine management ..... don't trust me just ask Vishnu themselves
Hope that helps

id just like to say something about the 3/16 mod. my friend put that sucker in this past week and i can definetly feel the difference. 1st and 2nd gear pulls harder now. boosts goes up to 12psi now in 1st and 2nd gear. before i had it in, boost was around 8-9 psi. i DO see it taper back down towards redline though.

The 3/16 mod always cracks me up when people do it....

You can afford a 25 thousand dollar car and you can't shell out another 400 for the cobb stage 1 reflash?

For god's sake check less boxes in your "options" and don't get the spoiler or the auto-dimming mirror or something!

People who can "barely afford" this car should not be messing with it IMHO.

Well that's my rant for the day.
