2004 Wrx Timing Belt Issue
A few months ago now I noticed that my timing belt wore through the timing belt cover ever so slightly and last night, for the first time, I heard it rubbing on the timing belt cover when I started the car and got out to get my hockey bag.
Is there a possibility of any damages that have already been done since there is play in the timing belt?
Or is there only a possibility if my timing belt skipped timing or slipped off the teeth completely?
Car seems to drive fine. I get 27.6 mpg highway, don't heard any abnormal noises.
Heres the history on the car:
I bought the car in September of 2011 from some dude on CL. He told me he bought the car for his son but then the son went off to school. I was excited to get my first subaru and kind jumped in head first. After owning the car for a while, I started modding. Put springs on the car and a few months later noticed that the shocks were blown from probably sitting. The car had a NEW paintjob (macco) from down in LA where I purchased the car and the paint job is terrible. The Front subframe says 05 wrx on it but my car is a 04. The hood is from a 05 wrx, the rear sway bar has wrx written on it. So it seems like the car was in a nasty wreck and got repaired without notifying insurance because it still has a CLEAN TITLE. My SRS an ABS lights are on and have been on since date of purchase. So I have to guess that the engine was pulled to paint because there is overspray in a lot of places but not a speck of paint is anywhere on the engine. The previous owner possibly put the engine together alone with the timing belt stuff which is the reason why the timing belt isn't secured properly.
I'd love some input/suggestions/guesses
Also, what do you people think.. Say screw the problem, drive the car to the ground and get a new complete engine and salvage the turbo/intercooler/exhaust components/ intake manifold and whatever else doesn't get damaged when the timing belt fails.
OR fix the timing belt and hope that no further damage has already been done.

Fix the belt, replacing the engine will be much more costly. Not to mention all the time that will be needed to fix and salvage the parts.
And fix it ASAP, Belts can show almost zero damage right up to the point before they break. You may be able to check out and fix the rubbing issue while they're replacing it
