2 Questions, You Got Answers ??

I just bought a 2004 WRX back on Saturday, and I love the ******-funker !! : )

First question, I can feel my turbo spool up around 3200 RPM, but if I keep the throttle open to the higher RPMs, I feel another surge at around 6000 RPM.
Almost like having a turbo and a VTEC or something. Anyone else ever notice this ??

Second question, the throttle cable is extremley loose, and I did a search and came up with nothing, but is it a good or bad idea to tighten the throttle cable ??
I did that in my Prelude, and must say that it was more responsive, but what about the WRX's ?

Thanks !!

You calling us lame 'cuz we didn't answer your questions within four hours?

Anyway, the second surge at 6k RPM is surprising: on my '02, the turbo seems to be a little "short of breath" at about 5k on up. Last I remember, I don't think the Stateside Imprezas have variable valve timing like the JDM models, but don't quote me on that.

As for the throttle line, I don't have a clue. Sorry.

I dont know for sure but I would think it would be ok to tighten the throttle cable as long as you just get rid of the slack.

I am suprised also by the surge, most bugeye and wrx's in general are tuned down in the higher RPM's, not to have a boost surge. Have you messed with any of the vacuum lines or anything ??

Getting rid of the slack is ok, the line needs to be taught, but not opening the throttle. Is is the actual accelerator line or is it the Cruise control line ?

Make sure you know what you're doing if you mess with that stuff

I don't know why theres a surge at 6k. Is it a manual?

The surge is normal on the 2004. I don't know why. Aftermarket dowpipe will probably fix it. I put a Tbe on mine and it went away. As for the throttle cable don't know what to tell you. Take it to the dealer and ask therm or look at another 2004 and see if it's the same way. I think mine is slack free. Is your 2004 stock?

I wasn't calling you guys lame, I love this site!
I was just bummed that no one replied by the time I got home from work. : )

My 2004 WRX is stock, and brand spanking new, and it is a manual.
I haven't messed with anything on it yet. No vacuum lines, no 3/16 hose mod...
nothing. But seriously, the turbo spools at 3200 RPM and the car pulls like crazy, then I hit 6000 RPM and it pulls even freakin' more, till redline. The car is new, so I have only gotten it to 6000 RPM a couple of times. Do you think I could be having boost spikes or something ?? It does seem a little odd, and yes, it is very VTEC like in feel. And I don't think these WRXs have variable valve timing...do they ?? I will get a downpipe, but to be honest, I like that extra surge of power there, it's just odd.

And I think I will tighten the slack in the throttle cable, becuase it is very loose.
If I put my finger under it and pull it up, it comes up like damn near 2 inches.....very loose.

i drive an 04 wrx and i dont think i have ever felt a surge at 6k. Maybe lean back on your seat and try it again. Sometimes the slightest body movements will make things feel different.

About the throttle cable, bring it to the dealership, its under warrenty. If you do decide to mess with it, make sure you do leave a little slack. It weakens the wire if its constantly tight.

The throttle cable on my 02 WRX is also loose so I called Cobb and they told me it would be ok to tighten the cable as long as there was a little slack. Like winding road said, if there is no slack it could decrease the life span of the cable. I'm going to do it right now and I doubt it will make any difference but I will report back with the results. If you do tighten the throttle cable you may want to mark the original position just incase.

my car gets a definite punch at 4800-5600 ... that seems the peak for me. then it peters out

there are threads about throttle cable adjustment. i've seen them.

Thats cuz everyone else was at work too. You get the most responses in the evening. Sometimes nothing till the next day. Just depends on who saw it, when, and if they have the answer.

Have faith young grasshopper. Trust the site and its people...

Break that sucker in. Give it a few thousand miles and that surge may deminish. Although it could have something to do with the throttle cable. Take it to the dealer and have them fix it. You will notice that some of the things that are weird on the car will go away. I ahd issues with first gear and now i have 13000 miles i have no more trouble. Give it time and make sure to keep it below 4000 rpm until it's broken in. I'd say after 2 to 3k miles then start modding.

Yeah, they don't call it a "break-in period" for nothing.

Your ECU needs to do some learnin'...at least one week.
