That's what I would think too. But, www.spdusa.com claims that a certain amount of backpressure is required for the turbo to spool quickly and 3" does not produce the "ideal" backpressure.

hey all
on my old rex wagon, i originally used a apexi old skool turbo back. the dp was non-bell mouth. the entire system went from ~73mm to 80mm as it exited into the muffler(if you could call it a muffler). i found a huge increase in torque and a appreciable increase in hp. alot less lag, and faster spool.
i am repeating others, but if you want lots of top end and huge hp #'s go big (like even 4"_. i prefer the torque over hp, especially down low, and therefore would stay at 2.5-2.75 or taper it in either direction from 3"-2.5 or like the apex i had.
but someone really hit paydirt when they said to free up restrictions. that alone on my car made all the difference, in both drivability and performance. vishnu uppipe and catless exhaust (a;though shiv would argue a cat makes just as much or more power) makes the turbo work alot less and allows air to move through faster. and in the end, that is the bottom line. squish and squeeze more air through the motor.
