Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

'02 WRX wagon - TD05 turbo a good idea with no other mods?

Hey guys, I have an 02 wrx wagon. I don't want to spend a ton of money upgraging my whole exhaust just yet, and I have come across a tdo5 turbo. Would this be a bad Idea to put in now without upgrading some things first. Can my stock injectors and fuel pump take it? Any help would be great. Just looking for a little more power. Thanks.

what exhaust system do you have right now? you WILL pretty much need a full turbo back to run it. won't cost you too much money. get a whole exhaust setup. and up pipe is highly recommended or maybe even need it. you need get as much as free flow you can get.

for 02 2.0 you will need injecters, pumps, and bigger intercooler. other than that i think you are pretty much set.

pump will cost you like 100 dollar and get a sti intercooler would work. and sti pink injecters.

this is a old thread, but to OP. all you have to do for 07 wrx is pump and a bigger intercooler with pipe. 06 and 07 dont need injecters.

as for which turbo, 18g is good with no lags. you will get more low, mid range power, and 20g you will get a lot of more high end power. if you do more a freeway driving maybe 20g is the way to go. if you are a touge person 18g is like the best setup for you.

as for power if you get 20g you looking at 300+whp and on a wrx tranny you will have to becareful. wrx tranny is very weak. don't dump the clutch and ETC...18g would be easier on the tranny side.

Wow, I totally forgot to keep checking this thread and don't know if anyone still reads it. I ended up coming across a stock td04 from an old guy down the street who has since built a ridiculous track car. I got it with 10k miles on it for $75 bucks and it was flawless. I installed an up and down pipe, spt intake, already had the N1 cbe, and tuned it stage 2 with an AP. It's not much more power, but it is a little quicker and fun to drive. I would like to have the bigger turbo and accompanying parts though. With 155kmiles now though, I don't want to have to rebuild anything anytime soon.

If you're looking for a little more power (i.e. a faster daily driver) then a turbo swap is definitely not the way to go. Keep in mind, whatever upgrades you do (full turbo swap + supporting mods, or just a turboback exhaust) you'll want to spend the money on a good protune or cobb ap.

Definitely don't throw a new turbo in your car with a stock exhaust.

I have an 02 wagon and i just did a full turboback + catless up pipe and a protune by ed at EQ tuning. I went from a baseline of about 160-170 awhp to 210. (almost feels like my sti now). This is with my stock td04 turbo. Total cost: helix up pipe ~$60, helix catted downpipe ~$100, borla hush catback ~$300, and protune $400 + $100 for manual boost controller. Close to $1000, but the car is so smooth and the power is very apparent.

I guess the point is throwing in a new turbo isn't the easiest (or safest) way to add power.
