What exactly is OBD?

What is OBD and when did they change from OBD-I to OBD-II???
I have a 1995 impreza base coupe, i heard somewhere it was like one and a half?

OBD stands for On Board Diagnostics. OBD-II is essentially a standardized way for a computer to talk to an OBD-II compatible reader. Car manufacturers switched to OBD-II in 1996 (mandated by law), but some are earlier then that.

I believe OBD-I is the general name given to the first generation of OBD systems, but every manufacturer had a propietary protocol and interface. OBD-II was created to provide a common interface for all manufacturers.

'OBD-1.5' might mean that your car supports the OBD-II codes without supporting the physical OBD-II connectors, or perhaps it only supports a subset of ODB-II functionality.

ok thanks, just making sure that my 2.2L swap wont give me any trouble wiring it to my 1.8L ECU..
