What do the experts think of these mods?
Hey everyone. This site is awesome. I'm the proud owner of a rally blue 2003 WRX. Just purchased a week ago. A friend of a friend has some upgrades that he is selling from a 2003 WRX of his own. He's selling the upgrades for $1100 installed. What do you all think? Sounds like a great deal. He said it will give me 303 whp?
AEM Cold Air Intake
Magnaflow exhaust (turbo-back setup) (how does it sound??)
TurboXS Utec
TurboXS boost controller
I might at add a TurboXS BOV. I don't fully understand its function, but does make very cool sounds. Would prefer stealth though.
I guess the mods were on his car for about three months and he recently had his tranny serviced - said his friends really dogged his car! When I purchased my car I purchase 3 extra years for the warranty to cover it till my loan is paid off. I know the mods will void some parts of the warranty, but I'm under the impression that an exhaust mod only affects the exhaust warranty and so on. Is this correct. Worse case senario would be to put the car back to stock if anything major happened. Will routine maintenance have to be done elsewhere so they don't have any options to add modification notes during an oil change for example? Sorry if I'm asking to many questions. I greatly appreciate any comments or insight you can share.

utec sucks you cant go over 15lbs of boost its safe and the bov sucks it sounds cool but you lose performance your turbo dies out and the engine doesnt adjust for it the intake looses power but sounds good i think it is worth the 15hp you lose it sounds bad *** and you wont need the bov put that on first and you can hear the stock one

chip
I really like the Turbo XS chip. Makes a big difference on low end power. An MBC helps too - but don't run over 16 psi if you want the engine to last a long time (as I do). Exhaust mods are good.
If you are going to increase the horsepower than you should also do some work on lights, suspension, tires and brakes. Safety factors for the extra power. Or else we may see you parting your car out here in a few months...

dont do the intake as your motor will run lean and makes your
tuning harder down the road. instead, pull out the silencer
and drop a K&N panel filter in the stock airbox.
utec is a very big bang but costs. the exhaust is also a good
touch too.
leave your bypass valve stock. you dont need it unless youre
gonna go over 20psi which you probably wont anyway.
btw, psi does not directly determine how much hp/torque
your gonna get. people have done over 200whp with only
15psi.

Don't by the warranty, as soon as you mod your car SOA will blame every breakage on the mods. In some cases they have a point but anyway you look at it the extended warranty is a rip off.
If you are going to spend $1000 get a cobb stage 1 or the vishnu stage 0. Both are just ECU remaps. Gut a stock uppipe with cel fix. and throw on an axleback if you want more sound. Everything except the axleback will look stock and you shouldn't get hassled by SOA for repairs.

Either thats a typo, or you are blowing stuff out your @$$. The utec is one of the best ecu upgrades on the market. It allows you to monitor and tune boost levels(and yes you can tune in more than 15psi), timing, fuel, and soon will give you a two stage rev-limiter, while maintaining all of the factory sensors, so you don't have to worry about installing knock sensors, and you don't have to worry about messing with A/C or cold start etc. Not to mention it's data logging capabilities. Definately worth the money. It sounds like your friend is giving you a pretty good deal. If everything is in working order. I'd tell him you don't want the blowoff valve because it confuses the ecu. The ecu uses a bypass valve which vents the air back into the intake. Where the blowoff valve vents to atmosphere, causing the computer to think something is wrong. Also forget about the CAI. Dyno tests have provent that the AEM CAI causes turbulence, and makes the MAF sensor read wrong leaning out your motor. The turbo back will give you significant gains. I'm not familiar with this particular exhaust, but gains on a turbo back are anywhere from 11 to 20whp(kakimoto being the exhaust to produce the most awhp). The other cool feature about the utec, is you simply unplug it, take about five minutes if you need to take your car to the dealer.
These are good upgrades, but don't expect 300awhp..
good luck

Today is the day
Thanks for all your input guys. Today I'm getting the modifications installed. Getting the UTEC and the turbo back exhaust. Thanks again for your comments. Should I terminate my extended warranty? Probably my next mod should be suspension related.

read up about your warranty-unknown fact- you can return it and get a full refund!
UTEC, Turboback, are all you need for 300 crank! hp, (225 whp).
NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE THO.
Dont listen to crack heads that say a UTEC can only make 15 psi of boost...and don't take everyones posts as facts. There are some very smart people on the board but there are alot more idiots.

thank good ness i blew my head out of my @$$ and didnt get that, you still have yours up your @$$ how is this the best? cobb is better ecutek is better, there is ahuge bulge in the foot well of the pasenger side. the cobb is ~300 ecutek is 1K utek950-1K.
the utec lets you adjust it yourself and blow your motor if you think you know what you are doing, with the others there is no guess work just tell them what you have and they do the rest
ps the bov sounds cool but if it doesnt repumb it sucks

cobb
I'm going to have to agree with batmanalan, you're and idiot. Just incase you've forgotton how to read, I didn't say utec was the best. I believe it was written exactly like this: " utec is one of the best ecu upgrades on the market." Had you gone and worked with the utec, you too would agree. I've worked hand in hand with the utec, the cobb reflash, and the ecutek reflash. All work well, but in the end, you'll end up getting more for your money with the utec. You don't have to tune all by yourself if you don't feel comfortable doing so. Turbo Xs offers a number of pre-written maps that are downloadable to your laptop for the utec. Something any idiot with a few computer skills can do. All I can say is you need to do your homework before you start ******* someones product, and telling people what to do. Remember you may have different needs than someone else, and different capabilities than others. Stick to what suits you, and keep your mouth shut, unless you're giving meaningfull advise, or being paid to rattle off like a moron.
