stock timing questions
Anyone here know what the stock timing curve looks like or what max timing under boost is on an 05 WRX? Also- how active is the knock sensor in the timing control? I know some cars it is virtually a key part of advance/retard control, but others it is more or less a "just in case you screw up, this *might* save you" type of deal. I am looking to run nice stock #'s at the track, but need to know what I am working with. Thanks.

Joe,
The knock sensor in the subaru is a very integral part of the ignition system. The OEM ECU is one of the most sophisticated to date and uses fairly complex learning algorithms to adjust the timing curve. Of course these algorithms mainly rely on the knock sensor for feedback.
As far as the timing curve... it very much depends on the octane of the gas you have been running, recent weather, and how hard you've driven your car. Basically it all boils down to weather your ECU has encountered knock in the past.
Generally you'll see approx 9-11* on spoolup, rising slowly untill about 5500-6000RPM where it starts to rise quickly in anticipation of quickly tapering boost. You'll see approx 25-29* at redline.
Again, this all depends on how much knock your ECU has encountered previously.

Before my recent Prodrivde re-flash I would encounter occasional short bursts of knock at a certan rpm range while pushing hard up a particular short hill with a little load, another person.
After the re-flash I have not yet encountered any noticible knock or noise, just pure power.
Maybee The tune paramaters have managed the timing and so on so this will not happen as easily?
