nubie question on reflashing?
I drive a stock 02 WRX and want MORE POWER. What is this reflashing all about? Is this a DIY job to increase the stock turbo's performance? And when do you knopw if the ECU needs reflashed... is it something that should be done after "X" number of miles to kick it in the a$$? I've searched the forum but can't find excactly what i'm looking for. this is probably a dumb question but somebody clear this up for me. Sorry in advance for butchering the terminology i'm sure its good for a few laughs anyway.

The reflash can be a very simple power gain for your car. You have a few options on who to buy from. Cobb accessport is a very easy way to go and have room to grow in the future. Ecutek is a custom tune for your car if you have a place that can do a reflash localy or you can send you ecu out for a overnight reflash. Either of these should be done after the break in period is over with your engine. After that mod away. Do a search on the different kind of engine managment and you can learn alot. Utec is another form of engine managment that is very user tuneable.

Above linked page to Cobb Tuning lists two pages of interest regarding AccessPort. While the AccessPort is a pretty popular mod for a lot of members, Cobb has not released their tuning tools to very many tuning facilities. This limits many customers to off-the-shelf maps which are very safe but do not make as much power as a custom dyno tune.
The same applies to mail order EcuTek reflashes. While several tuners sell reflashed ECUs on either an exchange or shipped-overnight basis, the custom dyno-tuned reflash will make more power. How much more depends on the individual car and the tuning knowledge of the person using the software. The difference is that EcuTek released their tuning tools more than a year ago to various tuning facilities around the U.S. There's a list of facilities on EcuTek's UK site.

I just spent Twelve something for Prodrive,s stage 2 group.
I installed all three components easily, then overnighted the ecu to prodrive.
the group has been just great about what I was hoping for, pretty good power gains, 211 or so at wheels. and was a chinch to install.
