Quick UTEC question

I just got my UTEC and flashed it to version 4.2c and uploaded TurboS's stage 2 map. Is there anything else I need to do before I can install it and start driving on it? What are the parameters? What do they do? do I need to change them at all?
Thanks,
Todd

read the booklet that comes with it.....then read it again.

you might want to have it tunes professionally.

Well I bought the Utec woth the intent that I would learn to tune. I guess what i'm asking is if the TurboXS Stage 2 map is a good starting point. can I just load that, drive, and begin to tune?

Todd,
I'm in the same boat w/ you. I currently have an uppipe and TBE and have been playing around w/ my UTEC at home (not installed yet). I'm planning on loading the Stage II map in all available switch positions and then run it at 0 (stock mode) and use the data logging capability. I don't have a wideband yet so the main thing I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on is knock. After I get comfortable with logging and evaluating them I'm gonna go to the stage 2 map and do some easy driving while logging and the progressively check out the rest of the map. I hope to have the wideband O2 sensor by next week. TXS and their vendors sell the UTEC w/ maps loaded so I'd think their off-the-shelf map should be good but be careful and take logs. Knock will kill an engine quickly.

- Install the base map that is the closes to your setup.
- Remove 4 deg of timing over the whole timing map.
- Read the manual twice
- Read the unofficial guide (http://www.wrxhackers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2498)
- Read the manual again (you think I am kidding? I'm not)
- Read the unofficial guide
- Get in your car do a 3rd gear run
- Search the log for knock....
- Read the guide again (not kidding)
- Ask questions, search and read posts on here and wrxhackers.com

I agree with what you posted.

Weird. a different approach towards the timing and I just highlighted this porton as I was a believer in
1) letting the ecu control all the timing (set all the values to (-100) until one get's the boost curve where they want it.
2) Then I would input the timing values (what the computer wanted to run) in for the timing map.
3) Finally, i would start to increase timing in one or two degree increments until I was getting knock and then back it off again.

But your methods would accomplish the same thing. If one was getting knocking, they could back timing another degree. If they weren't, they could add some more.

UTEC newbies. Read and read and read. If you've never tuned the utec before, there is a lot of information to absorb. Then read and read and read some more. If you look around, there are a lot of people out there with the utec and tuning the utec is probably the most discussed subject at any of the wrx forum websites.

Thanks for the tips. I went to wrxhackers and found their tuning guide and I have been reading that over. I have definitly been taking this slowly. I didn't realize just how much info there was and how many ways to royally screw things up. But I have to admit that it sure is fun.

Just so you know I wasn't trying to be a dick.

I've read the manuals and guides tons of times and it seems that you can always find something new that helps and something new that hurts.

I'd hate to read a post about somebody blowing up their engine. (especially me)

I didn't think you were being a dick. Reading and re-reading the manual is the best advice i've gotten. Especially because I am that type of guy that "doesn't need to read the directions".
