knock w/utec

When I have it on map 0 (stcok map) it does not knock at all. But when I switch it to map 1 (tbe) and then get on it, at about 4500rpm in 3rd gear it knocks. Why does it do this?

because you (the user in UTEC) need to log the knock, find out why it's happening, and take steps to prevent it from happening again. those steps will probably involve tuning the UTEC's maps. you must must must have a laptop if you expect to really use the UTEC.

Those base maps are not meant to be used like an ECU reflash. You must tune them.

it's probably boost related. you DO have a boost gauge, right?

I understand what you guys are saying but yes I have a laptop and a boost guage. I was just trying to find out why it would do this. I do know how to use the utec. But i already found what the problem was. So thankyou for the replys.

So what was the problem?

btw - this is usually not a boost issue, but a timing issue. Base maps from my experience are conservative on boost, way way way overly conservative on fuel, but tend to be a bit aggressive on timing.

aggressive on timing? c'mon--you're kidding, right?

stage 2 base map, 14 degrees in the midrange, 22 on top?

i've got at _least_ 6 degrees on that!

imo, boost is MUCH easier to get wrong because people set their ABC improperly. all it takes is one or two too many turns and you've overshot the target completely.

You'll never see knock on map 0, because the car is running the stock map. The UTEC only monitors knock when it's in control, which it never is in stock mode.

I experienced the same problems. Here's what to do.

1. Log a couple of runs to determine the boost level when it detinantes. If it's more than 18.2+- it will most likely detonate.
2. Lower your boost. Close the boost controller and give it one turn. Take a couple runs and adjust your boost gradually until you see it at 17.5 - 18.0 pound MAX in fourth gear on your log.
3. Now your boost is set right. If it is still not working 100% then download the new UTEC flash and software.
4. The new UTEC flash and software is 10 times better than the original crap they put out.
5. If this still doesn't work, get it tuned for $500.....it will save your engine and will run perfect.

No, I am not kidding, Mr. I Live On The Eastcoast Out here in not-so-sunny San Francisco we get 91 octane at best and between the way huge over dose of fuel and timing like this, right out of the 4.2b stage4 basemap had a lot of knock up top.

Stg4 base timing from 4500-6500
Code:
   [-100] [21] [21] [21] [21] [20] [17] [17] [17] [17] [17]
   [-100] [22] [22] [22] [22] [21] [19] [19] [19] [19] [19]
   [-100] [23] [23] [23] [23] [22] [22] [21] [21] [20] [20]
   [-100] [23] [23] [23] [23] [22] [22] [21] [21] [21] [21]
   [-100] [23] [23] [23] [23] [22] [22] [21] [21] [21] [21]
   [-100] [23] [23] [23] [23] [22] [22] [21] [21] [21] [21]
   [-100] [25] [25] [24] [24] [23] [23] [22] [22] [22] [22]
   [-100] [25] [25] [24] [24] [23] [23] [22] [22] [22] [22]
   [-100] [25] [25] [24] [24] [23] [23] [22] [22] [22] [22]
   [-100] [25] [25] [24] [24] [23] [23] [23] [23] [22] [22]
   [-100] [25] [25] [24] [24] [23] [23] [23] [23] [22] [22]
And note, I said "a bit aggressive". With those numbers I had knock when I first loaded the map.

yeah, i see what you're saying. i get accustomed to having 93 at every pump...

i can tell you though that sunoco 93 is better than mobil/exxon 93!

I have same problem here in the bay area, all 91 octane, you can get some 100 octane in Redwood city or San jose, but it is about 4.39 a gallon.
