How little coolant is not enough?
Weird thing happened this weekend. I was dutifully checking fluid levels after a long drive to visit the parents (drive from Knoxville to Central Alabama). The car was cooled off, as in not run yet for the day. I checked the coolant level, and it was below the "low" mark. No coolant available in the area, so I chanced it and kept a close eye on the temp gauge (the factory one, yes I know) for the trip home. No signs of overheating on the whole trip. When I got back to Tennessee, I bought a jug of coolant and checked again, only to find that the level looked fine. This time the car had been sitting for about 2 hours after driving. Any clues as to what's going on?
PS: There's no forum for "Maintenance" or cooling system, so this seemed like alogical location for this thread.

That tank that you are referring to is an expansion tank. What you are describing is pretty normal. I have the same thing with my car. At points I am even over the full mark after driving it. The actual place where you input coolant is where the radiator cap is on the passenger side of the intake manifold.
