I have a Turbo XS stage four car that went together in pieces.
I thought the utec (or equivilant exede ecutec ect.) was a great way to start and then adjust as I added more mods so I could get the most out of each dollar.
Self tuning is hard... even if you know alot about what you're doing. After adding part after part and spending alot of money, my car runs great and I'm pleased to say I've learned a ton about tuning (more than before anyways, I certainly am NOT bill from I-speed). But I think if I did it all over again I would have just gone to shiv at vishnu and dropped the dough for stage two all at once instead. A dyno tuned proven system with lots of testing and refinement. I'd stay stock for a while and see what systems all the tuners put together for the STI. I think we can expect great things...

Ash,
As for being a tuner, I guess I see all the little quirks of each system, the positves and negatives and when it comes to tuning I want full control. That si what it comes down to for me. If I have something that still acts as a piggyback I feel like I am riding on a Windows operating system, never really sure what to expect.
Where as if I have a standalone I know what to expect and if something odd occurs I have already put safegaurds in for those issues which I can then find and get rid of.
As for the everyday joe who wants to tune though, if you had to pick one, I would go with the UTEC as it seems to be pretty reliable, easier to use with every release and more features for more fun. Though not the greatest system, it does the job well.
Cheers,
Bill @ I-Speed USA

Not to mention I've heard rumours that the UTEC will be upgradable to a standalone mode in the near future.

mood swing...
Okay, so I wrote that when my car was runing a little funny and then a little tweaking made it run like a banshee! Only the UTEC or other self tunable ecu would have allowed me to make those changes myself and for that I have to say I'm glad I spent a grand to have it. I think it depends on how far you want to go down the road. I've been elbow deep in my engine several times and I'm about to go in again this weekend. If you're the kind of guy who contracts out for everything I would probly say go with a package and a reflash from some proffesional tuning shop. But if you like to get your hands dirty and have as Bill said, "complete control", then go for one of these bad boy ECU's that gives it to you.
At this point I would say UTEC over XEDE mainly because the support is so good. Not to mention TXS's approach from the beggining was to give the UTEC expansion capabilities that would keep it from becoming obsolete.
