Engine diognosis tools Q

Anyone using one of these inexpensive diognostic tools? I just got an Autoxray EZ Read 1000($150). It has Subaru codes in it. I was a bit disappointed to find that I need a software upgrade($100 and includes a PC cable) to get any useful data out of it.
What are people using these tools for?

I use mine mostly for CEL's. I don't trust it or my computer for accurate data. Maybe that's because I'm fooling my computer into thinking so many things, that it doesn't know what up or down anymore

Check engine light.

I use a Delta Dash to check the status of my engine.

Bummer

I called this morning about getting up grade software for my"code reader" and was informed that I would need to upgrade to a $450 unit for the features I wanted such as real time or freeze frame engine info. I really don't need that info bad enough to pay $450 for it.
