Are you in a WRX or an STi?

You can disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning. I don't know if this step is necessary but I seem to recall reading this somewhere.

Carefully pry up the narrow plastic trim piece (or molding) that covers the edge of the carpet where it meets the side sill on the passenger side footwell. This trim piece is held by plastic snaps so try to pull straight up.

You will also have to undo a couple of plastic fasteners with a large slotted head (about than 3/4", IIRC) that hold down the carpet and plastic kick panel on the passenger side. Once these items are out of the way, pull back the carpet to reveal the ECU. It may be covered by a thin gauge sheetmetal plate. Remove it.

Unplug the wiring harness connectors. They are sometimes really IN there, but there's nothing particularly tricky about pulling them out. Look for retaining catches for each connector.

Now that the wiring harness is out of the way, unscrew the fasteners that hold the ECU to the floor.

Install reflashed ECU pretty much in the reverse order. Hope I didn't forget anything - it's been a while since I've done it.

I don't know about the WRX, but the STi's ECU is under the passenger side floor board.

.....do NOT-----NOT pull on the wires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if the plugs are difficult.....wiggle them, with the locking tab pushed down, from one side to the other......until they come free.

works well if you use a small screwdriver on the locking tab and push the conenctor out.
