AP or Utec
Hey guys, I need some help here. I can get a utec used for 600, or I can get a new AP for 600. The only mod that I have is a turbo back. I don't really plan on much more until engine blows up (hello shortblock then). Maybe a tmic. anyway, the way things look so far, the AP seems my better choice. I just want to know what everyone else thinks.

That being said, I would have it tuned on a dyno (ecutek or cobb protuner). If I had used an "off the shelf reflash" I could have been hurting my engine, I would rather pay a little more to have a safe custom map.
my 2 cents

I think the AP is a better choice for the fellow who started this thread, given his seeking simplicity and reliability with good gains...
COBB caters just that... and the only complaints I've heard about were people doing something wrong during "marrying" the AP to their cars... Besides that, it's set to run safely and reliably... It corrects all the factory programming, which were arguably timed to meet emission standards... And yes, it's true no 2 motors are identical, this however can be due to the stock ecu's 'learning' ability to adapt to a drivers needs... You'll find some stock motors dyno higher than others... Those who dyno higher were broken in more aggressively... the ecu has been used to more LOAD if you will... Once reset, the difference should be only miniscule.
So yes, with that out of the way... It's true that those with the luxury of getting their vehicle specifically tuned will find larger gains and safer operation with such gains... Those without that luxury, or who are quite sate with the gains an AP provides, should go the AP route, because those were programmed to provide gains (although not exactly as much as a custom tune) without sacraficing engine life... It COULD be stronger and more aggressive, but then it wouldnt be as safe as it is... COBB left themselves a large safety margin, theres more to be had with a custom tune, but hey... its safe and its an extra umph! Also, the AP now has protune, which allows pre-set maps or custom tunes if one wishes!

A protuned AP can due everything a custom tuned ECUTek can do.
They are both reflashes of the stock ECU. No reason Shiv couldn't stuff his same maps into an AP.
