reflash
Our Mechanic (no names) just came back from a training seminar and now has the equipment to reflash an ecu with what he calls the "latest and greatest". This is not just a reset. The dealership is going to start providing this service as upgrade packages through a certain company, not to be named yet, to people who want to go that route.

Recognizing reflash
Vishnu was the first to offer reflashes on West Coast with their ECUTEK software. Then, recently, Cobb came out with their own reflash. What's appealing to me is Cobb's meager reflash fee [$20], vs, Vishnu's several hundred dollar fee. Also with Cobb, your reflash won't have an ECUTEK signature for your local Suby dealer to recognize. Sincerely, Collins

Does anyone out there really have a solid idea about whether Subaru, during routine maintenance, is likely much less able to detect a reflash? Seems like I've heard both sides of this argument with at least some of the reflashers asserting that Subaru can't even detect it. But does anyone really KNOW???
I just installed my stage 2 (Cobb) today BTW and it is COOL. This is the car that Suby really meant to make but for all the bureaucrats and naysayers.

Recognizing reflash
From everything I've been told[ By Subaru performance reps] ,they CAN recognize an ECUTEK reflash, IF they are one of the few dealerships that offer reflashes as part of the Prodrive upgrade packages. From my understanding, Cobb's can't be recognized on their ECUTEK software, since Cobb developed their reflash in-house, with their own R+D, and uses no ECUTEK software or tuning maps. By Cobb's reasoning, they can charge less because they are not paying a second party for copywrited software, as ECUTEK tuners do. However, if you're using a Stage 2, you probably have a downpipe with no cat s, which will void any warranty. I'm sure you probably know about the downpipie, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Sincerely, Collins

I fired off a e-mail to cobb the other day, asking about the ability to know when ECU was last flashed. I was asking because I plan on grabbing a accessPort, and then when my WRX neads service, I can flash back to stock ECU. Here is my e-mail, and there respnse.
Hello guys,
I have a couple of questions about the ACCESSPort.
I have 04 wrx and I realy dont want to get caught doing anything to my
car
that would void my warenty. I realize that you cant and wont guarnety
anything, however Im curious if the ECU keeps track of the last date the
unit was flashed?
My idea is to get your product so that I can flash back to stock when I
bring the car in for service. Will SOA have a way of telling the last
time
the unit was flashed?
Thanks for you time guys....

No, the ECU does not have a flash counter or last date stamp built in.
Let me know if you have any other questions, or feel free to search and/or

COBB Tuning
would a reflashed ECU work good with say a UTEC, or XEDE? just wondering. I know that having a reflashed ECU is the best thing you could get in terms of safety and what not, however, I would like to try to be able to tune some things myself and I don't want to get a full standalone ECU.
You know something, I'm tired of debating if my mods are detectable or will void the warranty or any of that crap. It's been my experience that Subaru service departments will do just about anything to deny warranty work. Honestly, I don't even care anymore. I'm confident that my Subaru was well-engineered and well-built and I'm not going to fight with those ignorant airheads anymore. I will have a mechanic fix it and pay myself. I will also explore every option I can before buying my next car, and it will most likely not be a new Subaru.

Could you give some internet links where I can read about reflash?
Can MY97 be reflashed?
Where you buy device, programm, instructions?
We know nothing about it and use Apexi power FC or PossumLink.
I have heard about MoTec and Autronic but have never seen it.

Theoretically, yes, a reflashed ECU would work with some piggy back systems but practically, there isn't really a reason to, IMHO. A reflashed ECU does everything that a standalone does and more. But, its set and forget. If you are tweeking fuel maps or whatnot, then I have to question your skill at tuning compared to Cobb or Vishnu and their dynos. And if you ARE that good then you should go with stand alone anyway. The off the shelf maps they provide leave some HP on the table but this can be optimised with a visit to their respective dyno for specific tuning to your mods.
